Stephan Balkenhol 10. September bis 23. Oktober 2011 Eröffnung: Freitag, 9. September 2011, 18 - 21 Uhr 10th September - 23rd october 2011 Opening: Friday 9th September 6-9 pm Weltbekannt und unverwechselbar sind Stephan Balkenhols grob geschnitzte und farbig gefasste Holzfiguren. Im Zentrum seiner Motivwelt steht der Mensch, aber auch Tiere und phantasievolle Hybridwesen. Immer wieder variiert der Künstler Männer und Frauen, zeigt sie häufig in neutraler Kleidung und ruhiger Gestik, manchmal aber auch ausgefallen inszeniert und mit unerwarteten Attributen ausgestattet. Obwohl keine Figur der anderen gleicht, erscheinen ihre Gesichter in ihrem Ausdruck rätselhaft typisiert, über dem Individuellen stehend, bewegt und still zugleich. Dieser Ausdruck steht in einem gewissen Widerspruch zu der von Splittern, Kerben und Fugen übersäten Oberfläche, die von einem expressionistischen Schaffensprozess zeugt. Und gerade dies verleiht den Skulpturen und Reliefs ihre Faszination und Unverwechselbarkeit. Stephan Balkenhol (*1957) lebt und arbeitet in Meisenthal, Frankreich, und in Karlsruhe, wo er als Lehrer an der Akademie für Bildende Künste tätig ist. Seit 1988 stellt er regelmäßig in der Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle aus. Nach seinen jüngsten Ausstellungen im öffentlichen Raum, 2010/2011 im Musée de Grenoble und im September bis Dezember 2011 im Chateau de Malbrouck, beides in Frankreich, wird er uns zum Münchner Open Art Wochenende (9.-11. September 2011) mit neuen Arbeiten überraschen. Die Ausstellung läuft mit dem Kunstwochenende München (21.-23. Oktober 2011) aus. english version Stephan Balkenhol (*1957) lives and works in Meisenthal, France, and in Karlsruhe, where he teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts. He has been exhibiting regularly at the Rüdiger Schöttle Gallery since 1988. Following his two most recent public exhibitions – at the Musée de Grenoble in 2010/2011 and the Château de Malbrouck from September to December 2011, both in France – Stephan Balkenhol will now be surprising us with new works. The exhibition at the Rüdiger Schöttle Gallery begins on the Open Art Weekend (9th – 11th September 2011) and ends on the Art Weekend Munich (21st – 23rd October 2011). Roughly carved and coloured, Stephan Balkenhol’s wooden sculptures are unmistakable and world renowned. Although his world of motifs is also populated by animals and fantastic hybrid creatures, it mainly revolves around the human being. Men and women are shown in constant variations, often in nondescript clothing and standing with a minimum of gesture, but sometimes in surprising postures and with unexpected attributes. While no two figures are the same, the expressions on their faces, at once still and moving, have a typically enigmatic quality that rises above the individual. Their facial expressions seem to contradict the splinters, notches and cracks that cover their entire surfaces and testify to the artist’s expressionist style of sculpture. It is precisely to this feature that his sculptures and reliefs owe their fascinating and unmistakable quality.
