Jes�s Rafa�l Soto Galerie Max Hetzler zeigt Bilder von Jes�s Rafa�l Soto in den R�umen Zimmerstra�e 90/91 vom 31. Januar bis 7. M�rz 2009. Soto (1923 � 2005) ist einer der bedeutendsten lateinamerikanischen K�nstler des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er gilt als Mitbegr�nder der kinetischen Kunst im Paris der sp�ten 1950er Jahre. Die dreidimensionalen Bilder, die in der Galerie Max Hetzler zu sehen sind, umfassen eine Zeitspanne von 1964 bis 1994 und zeigen einen Querschnitt aus verschiedenen Schaffensperioden. Wenn man sich vor Sotos Bildern bewegt, scheinen die Arbeiten zu vibrieren. Der Bildhintergrund aus Holz ist oft mit feinen, gleichm��ig aufgetragenen schwarzen und wei�en Linien �berzogen, durch die ein flirrender Effekt erzeugt wird. Auf die Bildfl�che sind in einigen Bildern mit Abstand monochrome farbige Quadrate aus Metall montiert, die durch Licht und Schatten sowie Farbkontraste die Komposition bilden. Soto wollte reine Abstraktion erreichen, indem er die Gestaltungskomponenten seiner Arbeiten seriell einsetzt und dadurch Strukturen wie ein Notenger�st in der Musik schafft. Aus der zweidimensionalen Fl�che wird unter Einbeziehung des Raumes vor dem Bild ein dreidimensionales Objekt: "Space flows: nothing limits it (�) In fact it is space that is in control, it defines and sets conditions." (Soto im Interview mit Hans Ulrich Obrist, 2005) F�r eine andere Serie von Bildern, die in der Galerie gezeigt werden benutzt Soto d�nne St�be aus Eisendraht, die an nicht sichtbaren F�den h�ngen, die vor das Bild gespannt sind. Die St�be bewegen sich minimal und verschieben sich leicht im Verh�ltnis zu den gemalten Linien der Bildfl�che, wodurch das Bild eine vibrierende Leichtigkeit erh�lt. Die geometrischen Farbfl�chen entstehen durch eine begrenzte Einf�rbung der St�be und erhalten eine Transparenz, die ebenfalls zur Leichtigkeit des Bildes beitr�gt. In der Serie �Escrituras� scheint der Draht aus der Bildfl�che herauszuwachsen und bildet geschwungene, unregelm��ige Formen, die an Schrift erinnern. Die Linien sind hier stabiler, der Eindruck von Bewegung wird allein durch den Perspektivwechsel des Betrachters hervorgerufen. W�hrend die Konstruktionen und Skulpturen anderer Vertreter der kinetischen Kunst oft mithilfe von Technik bewegt werden, arbeitet Soto vor allem mit der optischen Illusion. Soto wurde 1923 in Venezuela geboren, er lebte und arbeitete in Paris und Caracas. Er ist mit seinen Werken weltweit in Museen vertreten, u.a. im Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum und MoMA, New York; Tate Modern, London; Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sof�a, Madrid; Museum Ludwig, K�ln; Sprengel Museum, Hannover; Staatsgalerie Stuttgart; Louisiana Museum, Humleb�k; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam und dem L.A. County Museum, Los Angeles. 1973 gr�ndete der K�nstler das Museo de Arte Moderno Jes�s Soto in seiner Heimatstadt Cuidad Bol�var in Venezuela. Soto (1923 � 2005), one of the most important Latin American artists from the 20th century, is widely regarded as a defining figure of kinetic art, of the 1950s. He lived and worked in Caracas and Paris. The three-dimensional pieces that will be on view feature examples of his work from different periods, ranging from 1964 to 1994. Soto�s visual investigation implied a strict enquiry into the vibration of surfaces and the repetition of components. It aimed at freeing him from the conditioning of traditional form and composition concepts in order to make an approach of pure abstraction possible. The method of programming serial works allowed him to carry out a work without end, by possibly repeating the repetition. He also explored the universe of �relations�, relations between components, materials and movement that always included the notion of space. Soto was interested in a visual dynamism that evolves through the movement of the viewer in front of the picture: "Space flows: nothing limits it (�) In fact it is space that is in control, it defines and sets conditions." (Soto in an interview with Hans Ulrich Obrist, 2005) The background of each work is painted with fine, regular, black and white stripes which generate an optical vibration. Eventually monochrome coloured metal squares are mounted onto the wooden plane within a certain distance. The resulting effect of light and shadow, as well as the colour contrasts, construct the composition. By incorporating space between the background and the squares, it becomes a three-dimensional object which changes according to the light and the position of the viewer. In another series of works Soto uses very thin sticks, which swing in front of the pulsating background. They are adjusted to non-visible threads hanging in front of the picture, and move minimally. The sticks slightly shifting together, with the painted lines in the background, achieve a vibrating lightness. In the series �Escrituras�, the wires seem to grow out of the work and create irregular swirling forms that resemble writings. The lines are more stable, allowing the impression of movement to evolve by the viewer�s change of perspective. Unlike other leading artists of kinetic art, Soto avoids stressing optical illusion broad about by technically aided motion. Soto was born in Venezuela in 1923, he died in Paris in 2005. His work is included in important public collections worldwide such as Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and MoMA, New York; Tate Modern, London; Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sof�a, Madrid; Museum Ludwig, Cologne; Sprengel Museum, Hanover; Staatsgalerie Stuttgart; Louisiana Museum, Humleb�k; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam and the L.A. County Museum, Los Angeles. In 1973, the artist founded the Museo de Arte Moderno Jes�s Soto in his hometown Cuidad Bol�var in Venezuela, which includes his private collection of work by numerous artists.
