Catarina Leito
FLATLAND, Jan10 Feb 21 2009

Galeria Pedro Cera is pleased to announce Catarina Leito's new solo exhibition "Flatland", opening January 10th, 2009, at 6 p.m.

In "Flatland", Catarina Leito exhibits for the first time a series of acrylic paintings and an artist book titled "Uplift" where she continues to explore tridimensional structures that infer portability.

In the group of paintings named "Flatland", inspired by the book
"Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions" by Edwin. A. Abbot, Leito is searching for solutions in the two-dimensional space that challenge the representation of ambivalent tridimensional structures. The black "spills" that appear in all the works can be shape and/or ground, empty and/or filled, they are invasive and/or invaded. We don't know whether they are solid or liquid. They contradict themselves in their own space.

In "Uplift" the participation of the spectator is required. The book is conceived to incorporate the sculptural side and the two-dimensional space of the the drawing in one single object that can be closed and stored. When the seven pop-up parts that comprise the book are taken out of their case, they reveal an open and versatile narrative. The viewer is allowed to articulate the parts creating different sequences and possible narratives.

Catarina Leito was born in Stuttgart in 1970. She lives and works in New York City. Recent exhibitions include a solo show "Thicket" at Number 35 Gallery, New York, and the group exhibitions "L Fora" at the Museu da Electricidade, Lisbon, "Point of View", Museu da cidade, Lisbon, "Four Degrees: Artistic Views on Climate Change", Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

FLATLAND, Jan10 Feb 21 2009

Aqui, as "manchas negras"
