Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin is opening a new space on the first floor of 76 rue de Turenne, with a total surface area of 1500 square metres and 11 exhibition rooms. The artworks, that have been produced primarily for the exhibition, whose ambition is to unveil the multiple facets (not an exhaustive representation) of abstract painting today through a provocative dialogue. Some of the artists have chosen emblematic works from their artistic repertoire: Tauba Auerbach, a Fold Painting in reversed trompe-loeil, Matthew Day Jackson, a wooden construction, Mark Grotjahn, a large format drawing, Bharti Kher, a panel with multicoloured bindis, Takashi Murakami, two abstract paintings from 1991, Piotr Uklanski, an ink on canvas, while Bernard Frize, Matthew Day Jackson and Lee Ufan are all exhibiting recent paintings. Others have taken over a room in the Gallery: John Armleder has covered the walls entirely with linen fabric where paintings appear to spring from the walls. Adam McEwen has reproduced wooden and metal planks on aluminium panels but also Rorschach drawings in chewing gum on canvas. Olivier Mosset is revealing a new series of geometric Shape Paintings of identical format. R.H. Quaytman evokes the places that have marked his own personal history, as well as art history, with compositions that are at the limit of the abstract. Claude Rutault has developed an environment based on the principle of Mthodes/Dfinitions . Martin Whrl, a German artist, has produced circular and square wooden assemblages that play with materials and conventions of design and architecture. |
