Daniel Firman Blackflip Opening on Saturday February 26, 2011, 4 - 9 pm Backflip unveils a collection of never seen sculptures by Daniel Firman. Through the use of everyday objects and moulded bodies, the exhibition expresses visions of reversal, inversion and attraction. In the image of a backflip, a complex freestyle figure that involves jumping backwards in situ over oneself, the exhibition brings together works whose original subject is reversed, where the inside is brought outside and vice versa. Here Daniel Firman develops his privileged relationship with the body by exploring the laws of physics with a kind of logic that is identical to the backflip, the first acrobatic figure that was performed in weightlessness (Jenny, 2011). Time seems to have frozen the figures in their choreographic gesture. They are reminiscent of past performances of photography in Barthes terms of what was, or 19th century nature mouldings of the human body (Firmans sculptures jut out from the walls of the gallery, bronze hands and wrists concealing secret objects, recalling this process). In Rotomatic, Daniel Firman makes a washing machine turn around on itself following the rhythms of its washing cycles. The artist has suspended the fall of a slab of granite onto a freezer at the moment of impact (the evocation of Bertrand Laviers proposition that Daniel Firman already turned on its head with Free Fall, 2007) playing here with a dilation of time. A chair made of bronze imitates the lightness of polystyrene playing on the infinitely recurring image of its mimesis with More Weight, 2011. Lastly, a bronze hearth, The Fire, 2011, which is an archaic and archetypal motif invites contemplation, but also makes reference in a more psychic and symbolic way to the immutability of things / elements through the ages. Daniel Firman experiments with matter and the perception of the body in space and society through heterogeneous contexts, in line with the works of Robert Morris, Bruce Nauman and Dennis Oppenheim. Daniel Firman lives and works in Lyon.
