Claire Barclay Openwide 7 February - 12 April 2009 This exhibition aims to present the range of Scottish artist Claire Barclay's practice. It presents new work commissioned by The Fruitmarket Gallery and made with its spaces in mind, alongside selected sculptures she has made throughout her career and which are recognisable from previous showings. This is the first time that Barclay has shown new and existing work together, and the exhibition looks backwards as well as forwards, dramatising the artist's resistance to the idea that anything the artist makes, may ever actually be finished � that the work is still, conceptually at least, wide open. A new catalogue has been produced to accompany the exhibition, it documents significant installations made throughout her career, and includes a chronology tracing her mature artistic activity back to 1990. There are new texts by Fiona Bradley, Penelope Curtis and Claire Doherty, and a conversation between Claire Barclay and Francis McKee. The artist in conversation with Sam Ainsley, artist and senior lecturer, founder and former Head of the MFA programme, Glasgow School of Art. Handling Space Wednesday 18 March, 6.30pm. Free. Michael Archer, critic and Head of School, Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, University of Oxford, talks about the articulation of space in Barclay's work, her use of materials, and the physical intimacies inherent in the infusing of those materials with form and structure. More is More Wednesday 25 March, 6.30pm. Free. Jeanne Cannizzo, curator and anthropologist at the University of Edinburgh, explores the power and meaning generated when sets of objects are assembled in unexpected relationships. Dysfunctional Objects Friday 20 March, 5.30�8pm (light meal included) Tickets: Booking essential. This seminar investigates the nature of making sculptural objects and their references to functional objects. Speakers include: Jeanne Cannizzo (anthropologist, University of Edinburgh), Stephen Feeke (curator, Henry Moore Institute), Dean Hughes (artist, Edinburgh College of Art), Chantal Knowles (principal curator, Oceania, Americas and Africa, National Museums of Scotland), Alistair Rider (art historian, University of St. Andrews).
