Maeghan Reid 15 November - 10 January 2009 Opening Reception Saturday 15 November, 2008 Chung King Project is pleased to host the solo debut of Los Angeles-based artist, Maeghan Reid (born 1980). The history of nomadic populations, outsiders of society, hoboes, soothsayers, seekers and gypsies inspire Reid's new work in collages on panel and paper. She investigates the peregrinating bands of people who travel indefinitely, either choosing between rambling outside the borders of established societies, or forced into nomadic existences due to natural disasters, war, politics, or economic crises. The work explores these themes using various elements whether it be vintage photographs from the mid-1800s, crushed velvet from Winnipeg, Turkish green satin, linoleum unearthed from a car factory in Detroit, or a stodgy piece of foam core from the alley. ?They are all compiled, layered, abstracted and re-processed to reflect on the untold story of these outsiders of the mainstream, usually forgotten by the traditional narratives of history. Maeghan Reid's work has been widely exhibited both in the US and in Europe including Zieher Smith, NYC; Kantor/Feuer, Michael Kohn, Happy Lion and Monte Vista Project, Los Angeles, and the Forgotten Bar in Berlin. |
