GAMALIEL RODR�GUEZ The Concepts of Fuel & Full September 10th of October 17th, 2009 Private View: Thursday 10th September 2009 at 20:00 Espacio Minimo Gallery opens its current season with the first solo show in Spain by Puerto Rican artist GAMALIEL RODRIGUEZ under the title The Concepts of Fuel & Full. In it the artist reflects upon the different types of energy that are currently used by man, and for what purposes. These different energies, including fossil fuels such as petrol and its derivates (gasoline, propane, and butane), as well as the more sustainable fuels like Bio-Ethanol and Bio-Diesel are minutely examined by the artist. In his work he analyses various types of energy from their most elemental base, like cereal grain and its cultivation, right up to the advanced technological developments found in the extracting and processing plants. Gamaliel�s work studies the architectural aesthetic and the visual field generated by this technology. Using ballpoint pen on paper he has managed to create a style that is halfway between illustration and engraving, and which is reminiscent of architectural plans. These fuels are and have been greatly responsible for the current state of the world economy. A country�s fuel resources are a good index to measure their economic and, consequently, military power. The truth is that, although the investigations into the field of bio-fuels has since the 60�s been developed with an aim to reduce dependency on fossil fuels, the same technologies are nevertheless also being employed in the creation of new weapons of mass destruction by bringing down the cost of core explosive materials. The technology involved in the development of fuels and bio-fuels can be recontextualized and transformed into military weaponry considerably reducing the price of production. Uranium, which can be used to create enough nuclear energy to supply a city as big as Chicago or Madrid, can also be used in the creation of nuclear warheads. Similarly the unique properties of ethanol are used in the the creation of a range of explosives. Not to mention hydrogen that in the mid 60�s was used to develop the most dangerous weapon of the time, the hydrogen bomb. The show�s central piece, titled Waiting for Sunrise, is an enormous 260 x 320 cm drawing on different sheets of paper which depicts a French nuclear reactor, a mosque under construction, and the Denver Broncos Stadium in Colorado, USA (in the USA many of these massive stadiums house long distance missile launch pads). A fictitious connection is made between them as potential storage centres for nuclear warheads. The sunrise of the title could then be understood as the sunrise on any given day, or as the even brighter light that would be produced by the imminent explosion of one of the nuclear reactors. GAMALIEL RODR�GUEZ-AYALA (Bayam�n, Puerto Rico, 1977), graduated in Fine Art at the Universidad del Sagrado Coraz�n in Puerto Rico and obtained a Masters in Fine Art from Kent Institute of Art and Design in Kent, U.K. in 2005. GAMALIEL RODR�GUEZ The Concepts of Fuel & Full Fechas de la exposici�n: Del 10 de Septiembre al 17 de Octubre de 2009 Inauguraci�n: Jueves, 10 de Septiembre, a las 20 horas (Con la asistencia del artista) La Galer�a Espacio M�nimo inaugura la presente temporada con la primera exposici�n individual en Espa�a del artista puertorrique�o GAMALIEL RODR�GUEZ, cuyo t�tulo, The Concepts of Fuel & Full, alude al t�rmino fuel como combustible y a su parentesco con la palabra full (Full Metal Jacket Bullet �Cargado y listo para lanzarse-). En ella reflexiona sobre las diferentes energ�as empleadas por el hombre en la actualidad y sus finalidades �ltimas. Distintos tipos, desde los combustibles f�siles -Petr�leo, Propano, Gasolina, Butano- hasta los m�s sostenibles -Bio-etanol, Bio-diesel, Gas Natural- son minuciosamente examinados por el artista cuyas obras analizan esta variedad de tipolog�as desde sus bases m�s elementales, como los granos de cereal y su cultivo, hasta los m�s avanzados desarrollos tecnol�gicos de las plantas de extracci�n y producci�n. El trabajo de Gamaliel estudia la est�tica arquitect�nica y el campo visual generado por esta tecnolog�a mediante el dibujo a bol�grafo sobre papel con el que logra crear un estilo a medio camino entre la ilustraci�n y el grabado, evocador de los planos arquitect�nicos. Ciertamente, estos combustibles son y han sido, en gran medida, responsables del panorama econ�mico mundial. Son indicadores de primer orden para determinar el poder�o econ�mico de un pa�s y, consecuentemente, su capacidad militar. Porque aunque desde los a�os 60 las investigaciones en el campo de los biocombustibles se han desarrollado con intenci�n de reducir la dependencia de los combustibles f�siles, lo cierto es que estas mismas tecnolog�as son empleadas en la actualidad para la creaci�n de nuevas armas de destrucci�n masiva, abaratando los costos de materia explosiva prima. Las tecnolog�as de desarrollo de combustible tanto energ�tico como bio-energ�tico son capaces de recontextualizarse y transformarse en armamento b�lico con una reducci�n significativa del precio de producci�n. El uranio que puede ser desarrollado para crear energ�a nuclear y abastecer a una ciudad como Chicago o Madrid tambi�n puede ser desarrollado para convertirse en ojivas nucleares. Igualmente el Etanol tiene propiedades para convertirse en explosivo por lo que ya se est�n formulando diferentes explosivos con sus propiedades �nicas. Por no hablar del Hidrogeno y sus mol�culas en el agua, ya que se convirtieron en una de las armas mas peligrosas de mediados de los 60, la Bomba de Hidrogeno. La pieza central de la exposici�n, Waiting for the Sunrise, es un enorme dibujo de 260 x 320 cm en varios papeles en el que aparecen un reactor nuclear franc�s, una mezquita en construcci�n en Bagdad y el estadio de los Broncos de Denver (Colorado, USA) en una conexi�n ficticia entre posibles centros de almacenamiento secreto de ojivas nucleares (en USA muchos de los campos de juegos masivos est�n acondicionados para ser plataformas de lanzamientos de misiles de largo alcance) y con un doble juego de alusiones en el t�tulo, a un amanecer cualquiera o la inminente explosi�n de uno de los reactores que producir�a una luz a�n mas potente.
