NONO BANDERA . Zweifel From March 17th to May 7th, 2011 Opening: Thursday March 17th, 8 p.m For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror, which we are still just able to endure. - Rainer Maria Rilke NONO BANDERA has chosen Zweifel as the title for his sixth solo show at Espacio M�nimo. Zweifel, a German word meaning uncertainty, was the first word that the artist heard when he arrived to Berlin. Fascinated by the sonority of this term, he noted it down immediately in his notebook. Since long time ago, three notebooks or journals of drawing accompany his travels: one finished with notes containing ideas of the last two or three years, a second one already started and a last one in blank. From these notebooks emerges a working procedure where new stages and previous ones communicate fluently. The resultant creative process, based on self quotation from the archive of uncompleted ideas that are the notebooks, define the leitmotif of the project: a residual product, the leftovers of experiences and discoveries, a compilation of memory remains. Moving away from the Greek ideal of perfection expected in the academic drawings employed as medium, NONO BANDERA drifts apart from its limitations based on order and proportion. The romantic ideal, where disparity and disorder mark the guidelines, is the source that generates the work. Disconcerting scenes are juxtaposed to the clumsy classicism of the drawings creating strange and uncanny sets. Thus, veiled, present in the form of its absence, the uncanny manifest itself. Following Eugenio Trias affirmation, the uncanny constitutes condition and limit to beauty, if the uncanny reveals itself manifest, the aesthetic effect disappears. In this sense, the series �Mr. Sandman�, in allusion to E.T.A Hoffman tale included in Freud�s The Uncanny, illustrates perfectly that artist modus operandi. In his own words and continuing with the account of his visit to Berlin: That same night, having dinner with a friend, we talked about child tales and I told her that, since I was very young, I have always enjoyed scary tales, specially the uncanny ones. She told me a German one titled Mr. Sandman. In this short tale a terrible character visit child that doesn�t want to sleep at night. And throws sand to their eyes provoking their eyes to fall off their sockets. The next morning, I draw Mr. Sandman, but smartly dressed. Like in previous projects, NONO BANDERA begins from pre existing works of art �in this case, academic drawings from the 50s- altering and re signifying deliberately its images. The creative process of Zweifel takes up again a stylistic resource suggested in his series This & That (2003), based on expanded painting where the traditional linear reading of the canvas is fractured. In this case, the artist renounces to the frame as the limit that contains the work of art, transferring his personal imaginary to the walls in a game close to mural painting. Thus, the wall, transformed in a scenario, conditions the interpretation of the work hanged and places it in a determined context. The installation produces a matryoshka effect: the image drew on the wall works like a structure that accommodate the drawing that, at the same time, contains the artist intervention. NONO BANDERA (M�laga, 1958), is profesor in Facultad de BBAA of Pontevedra. After a fruitful perior as a child artist, and after finishing studies of fine arts in Madrid and Mexico D.F., he exhibits with regularity in art galleries and public institutions since 1995. His works are present in collections such as MNCARS in Madrid, Zabludovich Nono Bandera .- Zweifel 17 Mar. 2011 / 07 May. 2011 NONO BANDERA ha elegido Zweifel como t�tulo para su sexta exposici�n individual en la galer�a Espacio M�nimo. Zweifel, un vocablo alem�n que significa incertidumbre, fue la primera palabra que escuch� el artista al llegar a Berl�n y su sonoridad hizo que la apuntara inmediatamente en su libreta. Desde hace bastante tiempo, tres libretas o cuadernos de dibujo lo acompa�an en sus viajes: una terminada con apuntes que pueden remontarse a uno o dos a�os atr�s, otra iniciada y una tercera en blanco. As� surge un m�todo de trabajo donde el contacto entre las nuevas etapas y las anteriores se produce de forma fluida y natural. Un proceso creativo basado en la autocita a partir de este archivo de ideas no realizadas que constituyen las libretas, define el ideario de este proyecto: un producto residual, aquello que queda de experiencias o descubrimientos, una recopilaci�n de los restos de la descomposici�n de la memoria. Alej�ndose del ideal de perfecci�n griega pretendido por los dibujos academicistas que le sirven como soporte, NONO BANDERA se distancia de esas limitaciones basadas en el orden y la proporci�n. El ideal rom�ntico donde desproporci�n y desorden marcan las pautas se convierte en el motor que genera este trabajo. Desconcertantes escenas se yuxtaponen al clasicismo torpe de los dibujos creando unos conjuntos extra�os, obscuros. As�, de forma velada, presente en forma de su ausencia, se manifiesta lo siniestro. Tal y como afirma Eugenio Tr�as, lo siniestro constituye condici�n y l�mite de los bello, si existe una revelaci�n manifiesta de lo siniestro, se destruye el efecto est�tico. De esta manera, la serie El Arenero, en alusi�n directa al cuento de E. T. A. Hoffmann recogido por Freud en Lo Siniestro, ilustra a la perfecci�n el modus operandi del artista. En sus propias palabras y continuando con el relato de su visita a Berl�n: Esa misma noche, cenando en casa de una amiga alemana, hablamos de cuentos infantiles y le dije que desde peque�o siempre me gustaron los cuentos nocturnos, sobre todo aquellos que eran siniestros, y ella me cont� uno alem�n titulado �El Arenero�. En este breve relato aparece la figura de un hombre horrble que iba a ver a los ni�os que no quer�an dormirse por la noche para arrojarles arena en los ojos hasta que estos saltaban de sus cuencas dando botes en el suelo. Al d�a siguiente realic� un dibujo del arenero, pero vestido elegantemente. Si bien la obra que presenta NONO BANDERA se inicia como en anteriores proyectos art�sticos partiendo de obras preexistentes -en este caso concreto, dibujos de una academia de los a�os cincuenta- alterando y resignificando deliberadamente sus im�genes por medio de repintes y a�adidos, el proceso creativo de Zweifel retoma un recurso estil�stico planteado ya en su serie This & That (2003) basado en la pintura expandida, donde se fractura la tradicional lectura lineal del cuadro. En este caso, el artista renuncia al l�mite del marco como contenedor de su obra, trasladando su imaginario personal a las paredes de la Galer�a en un juego cercano a la pintura mural. De este modo, la pared, convertida en escenograf�a, condiciona la interpretaci�n de la obra colgada y la sit�a en un contexto determinado. La instalaci�n produce un �efecto matrioska�: por un lado, la imagen dibujada en la pared funciona como estructura hueca donde albergar un nuevo dibujo �representaci�n al carboncillo del vaciado de una escultura cl�sica- que, a su vez, acoge la intervenci�n del artista. |
