DIDIER MENCOBONI ÉPISODE X : GÉNÉRATION …ETC… December 7th 2013 –February 22nd 2014 This tenth episode held at Galerie Eric Dupont is an exhibition which resembles a story where the main character is absent. All of the works presented in the showed are an emanation of the central work entitled … Etc …, a painting consisting of 2132 existing paintings to date. In this exhibition, none of the paintings appear in their entirety, only a selection of the avatars initiated by this pictorial project, over the years. The exhibition presents a range of works from some which focus on the most material aspects of painting to others which emphasize the immateriality of its reproduction. For the first time, Mencoboni presents photographs, in particular those of pictorial matter salvaged from the drain of his sink. These are the scraps of … Etc …which didn’t make it to the canvas. Frozen via photography in a composition which enhances their charater, the remnants of … Etc … take on a new meaning here, thus acquiring a new status. Between plan and space and in the continuation of his mobile series, this exhibition presents new structures which provide a new manner of sprinkling color ; thus setting painting apart from the object painting . If his mobiles occupy space, the pieces shown here are more discreet. They are going to attach themselves to the wall, thereby achieving a moving frontality, which hovers between plan and volume. Two new paintings from the Random series will be displayed ; these canvases consisting of fragments of former watercolors, which have been cut up and strewn onto the surface of a painting, where they are finally glued to the canvas. These paper cut-outs are attempts at finding lost paintings or paintings to come. Here again, these watercolors destined to destruction gain a new life via the action of scissors. In a composition where randomness is summoned, they find an ultimate visibility. Continuing with the theme of absence present in … Etc …, we also find drawings from the series Projection . Each drawing represents a space where the painting, …Etc …, seeks to invent its own architecture. Began in 1993, this series has not ceased to develop, lingering between reality and fantasy, a mazelike place where painting multiplies and expands. In order to enrich these proposals, a new territory – the digital one this time – will complete the work. Using the series … Etc …as a departure point, Mencoboni extracted and took an inventory of thousands of elements, creating a gigantic database. Following the analysis and manipulation of this data, using software designed specifically for this project, we are confronted with the following result : a production of images which extends beyond the physical action of the artist. This image-producing device posseses an autonomy ensuring the capacity to autogenerate, with the aim of creating an unlimited number of images of painting. In terms of visualizing this idea, there are several possible diplay modes, ranging from projection to printing. For this first presentation, Generation …Etc …will take the form of the digital image. Generated by a computer, throughout the course of the exhibition at a rate of one image per three seconds, tens of thousands of new images of paintings will appear, each unique, repeating themselves only after several millenium have gone by ; each new image replacing the previous one, with no end in sight, except that which appears in the form of the viewer’s exhaustion of curiosity.
