RothStauffenberg CARTES POSTALES 7 March � 18 April 2009 Opening: Friday, 6 March 2009, 6-9 pm Esther Schipper is glad to present the fifth solo show by RothStauffenberg. The combination of installation and objects in the exhibition refers to a specific context in film history and continues the artists engagement with the film medium. The gallery�s darkened main room contains Mobile Cinema (2009), a two-part installation in wood and linen. The film program selected by the artists shows different parts of the feature film �Das K�nigreich von Mozartbique� (The Kingdom of Mozartbique) plus thematically related productions.* The film was made in 2007, mostly at the Grande Hotel in Beira, Mozambique!s second-largest city. Built in the 1950s, the hotel with its 370 rooms was the largest on the African continent. It closed after just a few years and has been squatted since the early 1980s. Today, it is still home to 3000 people. During the film, the Hotel�s residents tell fictitious stories. They exchange masks, wigs and costumes, and stage themselves in a succession of different roles. Together with the music and the commentary, the images develop a new fiction and aesthetic, creating an essay film with clearly posed segments. At the same time, the installation refers to the development of the film industry in Mozambique. The country gained independence in 1975 and became a socialist people!s republic under President Samora Machel. He invited filmmakers like Shin Jun-chul and Ruy Guerra, as well as the French directors Jean Rouch and Jean-Luc Godard, to work at the newly founded National Film Institute (INAC) in Maputo to help establish an independent film industry.** Samora Machel placed his hopes in the power of images to spread the idea of a Marxist Mozambique throughout the country. Trucks drove from village to village, projecting the films of the Kuxa Kanema on village squares at night. In this way, the idea of the �New Man� was spread, at the same time as giving the population a sense of shared culture. From the ceiling of the second room hang four casts of one of the wigs (Neon, 2009) that were the most popular of the many masks and disguises. Especially the leaders of groups or clans often selected a crown-like Neon wig. For the �Cartes Postales� exhibition, RothStauffenberg have designed a pamphlet to be printed in an edition of 100 copies, containing transcripts of the voiceover from the film, as well as historical image material and text excerpts. Der Zusammenhang von Installation und Objekten in der Ausstellung verweist auf einen spezifischen filmhistorischen Kontext und f�hrt die Auseinandersetzung der K�nstler mit dem Medium Film fort. Im abgedunkelten Hauptraum der Galerie ist das Mobile Cinema (2009) installiert, besteh-end aus einer zweiteiligen Holz- und Leinenkonstruktion. Das von den K�nstlern zusammen-gestellte Filmprogramm zeigt unterschiedliche Teile des Spielfilms �Das K�nigreich von Mozartbique� sowie thematisch �hnliche Produktionen.* Der Film entstand 2007 haupts�chlich im Grande Hotel von Beira, der zweitgr��ten Stadt Mosambiks. In den 1950er Jahren erbaut, war das Hotel mit seinen 370 Zimmern das gr��te auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent. Es wurde nach wenigen Jahren wieder geschlossen und seit Anfang der 1980er Jahre von zahlreichen Menschen besetzt. Noch heute dient es 3.000 Personen als Unterkunft. W�hrend der Filmaufnahmen erz�hlen die Bewohner des Hotels fiktive Geschichten. Sie tauschen untereinander die Masken, Per�cken und Kost�me und inszenieren sich immer wieder in anderen Rollen. Die Bilder entwickeln im Zusammenspiel mit der Musik und dem Kommentar eine neue Fiktion und �sthetik, es entsteht ein Essay-Film mit deutlich inszenierten Teilen. Gleichzeitig verweist die Installation auf die Entwicklung der Filmindustrie in Mosambik. Das Land erlangte 1975 seine Unabh�ngigheit und wurde unter der Pr�sidentschaft von Samora Machel zu einer sozialistischen Volksrepublik. Dieser lud Filmemacher wie Shin Jun-chul und Ruy Guerra sowie die franz�sischen Regisseure Jean Rouch und Jean-Luc Godard ein, sich am neu gegr�ndeten Nationalen Filminstitut (INAC) im Maputo am Aufbau einer eigenst�ndigen Filmindustrie zu beteiligen.** Samora Machel setzte auf die Macht der Bilder, um die Idee von einem marxistischen Mosam-bik im ganzen Land zu verbreiten. Lastwagen fuhren von Dorf zu Dorf und projizierten nachts auf Dorfpl�tzen die Filme des Kuxa Kanema. So wurde die Idee des !Neuen Menschen" verbreitet und gleichzeitig der Bev�lkerung das Gef�hl einer gemeinsamen Kultur vermittelt. Von der Decke des zweiten Raumes h�ngen vier Abg�sse einer der Per�cken (Neon, 2009), die von den zahlreichen Masken und Verkleidungen am begehrtesten waren. Vor allem Anf�hrer von Gruppen oder Clans griffen immer wieder zu der einer Krone gleichenden Neon-Per�cke. F�r die Ausstellung � Cartes Postales � haben RothStauffenberg ein Heft in einer Auflage von 100 Exemplaren konzipiert, in dem die Voice-Overs des Films nachzulesen sind. Au�erdem findet sich historisches Bildmaterial sowie Textausz�ge dort abgedruckt.
