Michael Whittle September 8, 2010 The Diamond Anvil Exhibition dates: September 9 - October 30 Daniel Cooney Fine Art is proud to announce our third solo exhibition by British artist Michael Whittle. The exhibition consists of 11 finely crafted ink drawings. The title, The Diamond Anvil takes it's name from a device made of two diamond tips capable of generating over 3 million times the earth's normal atmospheric pressure. The artist expands on previous work combining scientific, historical and poetic references including recent discoveries made in the field of high pressure Physics. While on first glance the drawings seem abstract, upon contemplation they become extremely complex and intriguing. As they reveal themselves to the viewer we become aware that there is method and specific meaning to each line that may be clear to only the artist himself. The artist is a trained and former practitioner of biochemistry. After a short career as a scientist he returned to college as an art student and eventually earned an MA in sculpture from the Royal College of Art in 2005. Currently, he is a Research Scholar at the Kyoto City University of Art and resides in Kyoto. Whittle has exhibited in Seoul, Korea at Gallery NV, in London at Man and Eve Gallery and the Laura Bartlett Gallery. He is the recipient of the MEXT Scholarship from the Japanese Government, the Kyoto City University of the Arts Scholarship, the Daler Rowney RCA Drawing Prize and the Farquhar Reid Trust Art Prize.
