Dan Estabrook At Sea March 1 - April 24, 2010 Daniel Cooney Fine Art is proud to announce a new exhibition by Dan Estabrook, titled At Sea. The exhibition continues Estabrook's twenty-year exploration of 19th-Century photographic techniques, concentrating on the earliest paper process, the Salt Print. These handmade prints are often further enhanced with the addition of watercolor paint and gouache, adding another layer of meaning to these already enigmatic images. The works in At Sea draw inspiration from the very water and salt of which they are made, evoking a dream view of the ocean as a symbol for love, lust and getting lost. This is Estabrook's fifth solo exhibition in New York City. He has also shown his work in solo and group exhibitions internationally including the Houston Center for Photography, the Art Institute of Boston and the Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Currently, Estabrook has a solo exhibition titled Forever and Never at the Museum of Contemprary Art in Jacksonville, FL and will have an exhibition at the Art Institute of Boston later this year. His work has been reviewed in the New Yorker, Art on Paper and the Village Voice among others. He has been featured in the New York Times, and the books The Antiquarian Avant-Garde by Lyle Rexer and The Art of Enhanced Photography: From Cyanotype to Digital by James Luciana and Judith Watts. He is also the subject of a recent documentary by Anthropy Arts. Estabrook holds an M.F.A. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a B.A. from Harvard University. He has been awarded the Visual Artist's Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Photography Fellowship from the Henry Buhl Foundation and the Kate Neal Kinley Memorial Fellowship for the Arts among other prestigious awards.
