DAN ESTABROOK
Our Song, In Twenty-Six Parts

May 9 - June 15
Opening Reception: Thursday, May 9th : 6 - 8

Daniel Cooney Fine Art is extremely proud to announce Dan Estabrook's third solo exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition is titled Our Song, in Twenty-Six Parts and is Estabrook's most ambitious artistic output to date. It is comprised of 13 new gum bichromate and carbon prints with applied paint intertwined with a selection of historical photographs and found objects.

At the center of the exhibition sits Our Song made of a music box and paper with watercolor and pencil. The music box plays a repeated melody found in the stains of an old scrap of paper. On the walls are images made by the artist from antiquated photographic processes with applied paint and pencil markings. Along side the artist's images are historical photographs such as an 1860's tintype, which documents a medical procedure known as "blood letting".

Estabrook mines the intricacies of his personal history and the history of photography to tell his story. As are most personal stories, his is told in bits and pieces and at best, reveals only a slight and out of focus narrative. The viewer is asked to revel in the beauty of what is revealed and create what is not. Bring your own vision and fill the pauses between images.

For over twenty years Estabrook has been making contemporary art using a variety of 19th century photographic techniques. Recently he has focused on the earliest paper photographs - calotype negatives and photography with forays into sculpture, painting, drawing and other works on paper.

Estabrook has exhibited widely and has received several awards, including an Artist's Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts in 1994. He is also the subject of a recent documentary by Anthropy Arts. Most recently Estabrook was awarded the 2013 Frances Niederer Artist-In-Residence at Hollins University.
