Shen Wei I Miss You Already September 13 - October 27 Daniel Cooney Fine Art is proud to announce our second solo exhibition of photographs by New York based artist Shen Wei. This series of large-scale color self-portraits titled I Miss You Already is inspired by Wei's conservative childhood in China and follows his process of self-reflection and discovery. Wei began using himself as his subject during his 2009 Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Residency in Italy. He has continued to make images in New York, India, China, Turkey and other locations. The images are provocative yet subtle and gentle. They reveal a young man's exploration of himself and his sexuality while pushing the boundaries of his own comfort. Wei has said, "While this project is my awakening to liberation and hope, it also represents a universal search for our place in nature and society". Born and raised in Shanghai, Shen Wei currently lives and works in New York City. He received an MFA in photography, video, and related media from the School of Visual Arts in New York and a BFA in photography from Minneapolis College of Art and Design. His work has been exhibited and published nationally and internationally, and is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, The J Paul Getty Museum, Museum of Contemporary Photography, the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, and The Kinsey Institute. He is a recipient of fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center, UAI/New York City, LMCC and Light Work. His monograph, Chinese Sentiment was published in 2011. In the Second Gallery: Self Portraits by Amos Badertscher, Claude Cahun, Tseng Kwong Chi, Nan Goldin and Yasumasa Morimura. Please note the gallery's new address: 508 West 26th Street, Suite 9C.
