Jim Isermann 23 June - 30 July, 2011 Opening: 6.30 to 8.30 Thursday 23rd June, 2011 Tommaso Corvi-Mora is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by US artist Jim Isermann. The past five years of Jim Isermann’s studio practice have focused on hard-edged geometric abstraction; he has adopted a slow and painstaking manual execution at odds with the repetitive patterns of the paintings. The current exhibition includes six new paintings, variations on similar patterns which, in the words of the artist, “set about the impossible task of codifying a sublime algorithm”. All of the works in this series are based on the same mathematical formula, developed in different ways in each painting. The choice of colours is based on a similarly strict set of rules. With this exhibition Jim Isermann continues his investigation - begun in the early Eighties - of the connections between art and design. His work has drawn inspiration from the masters of modern design like George Nelson, Verner Panton and Harry Bertoia as well as from vernacular, Middle- American versions of their work. "Far from any postmodern critique of the 'failed ideals' of the modernist past, his project espouses a renewed, historically conscious idealism, one that champions the ornamentations of the past as symbols of cultural identity and of our insistent desire to embellish the world" (Michael Duncan). Jim Isermann has exhibited extensively, in Europe and in the US, since the beginning of the Eighties. His most recent projects include a commission for the Cowboys stadium in Dallas, Texas and a site-specific work for the UCR Genomic Building at the University of California, Riverside. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday 11 am to 6 pm. For further information or photographic material please call 020 7840.9111. Next exhibition: Anne Collier, September - October 2011.
