Assembly: Art in the Bar Rupert Clamp � A yard of earth Exhibition: Friday 3 July � Sunday 2 August 2009 Open: Monday � Sunday 9am � 11pm Since graduating from the University of Derby in 1995, Rupert Clamp has worked in response to different sites across the UK. He gathers traces of a space from historical fact and archival documents, researching its history to create a new dialogue with the space. At Chapter, Clamp has been working with contemporary and historical maps of the building, the city of Cardiff and the immediate locality to create a collage - part paper, part drawing - straight on to the caffi/bar walls. At first glance the maps, diagrams and other forms of cartographical paraphernalia appear straight forward; pinned across a series of wall-mounted notice boards, hinting at locations associated with the space. However, on closer inspection the ideas connecting these various findings together are far from clear: drawings and maps seem unrelated; scale remains uncertain or inconsistent and this works to draw the viewer in as they attempt to assemble the artist�s clues and interpret the archaeological remains, all the while adding to the work by projecting onto it their own knowledge and experience of the area. As the merge between present and past history of Chapter is explored through the installation, tales of Victorian explorer�s routes emerge placing the building and the city�s rich past back onto a map of Cardiff. These journeys through time and our understanding of past stories are explored through this exhibition and playfully challenge our own stories - whether fact or fiction. After graduating from the University of Derby in 1995, Rupert Clamp gained a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and Training in Compulsory Education and Training. He has exhibited across the UK in both solo and group exhibitions including Fighting Man at Vane, Newcastle. He is currently working as a creative consultant with Sheffield County Council to help research and develop their public art strategy. Rupert Clamp is based in Marsden, West Yorkshire.
