Assembly: Art in the Bar Alex Gene Morrison New Dawn Curated by Elena Schmitz Exhibition: Monday 23 June Sunday 10 August 2008 Opening times: Monday Sunday 10am9pm The works of Alex Gene Morrison lure us into a world of slick and slimy mutant creatures, of colourful landscapes featuring melting heads, rotten carcasses and giant flies. Morrison has been described in The Guardian as an acid punk artist and his multi-layered references flip us from anxiety to ecstasy and from melancholy to horror; often leaving us feeling narcotised. Morrisons paintings, collages and animations are bound together by a hypnotic aesthetic that is equally seductive and repulsive, evoking powerful human emotions such as desire, fear, disgust and wonder. A sensation of searching for something yet unknown that may provide enlightenment runs through the work. This exhibition continues our successful Assembly: Art in the Bar programme and will be the first in our temporary Caf/Bar in Chapters Stiwdio, located here for the duration of Chapters redevelopment until mid 2009. Biography Born in Birmingham in 1975, Morrison graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Painting in 2002.
