Vernon Ah Kee: theendoflivingandthebeginningofsurvival, 2012 In 1854 the United States government offered to ‘buy’ a large area of Indian land; in return they promised a ‘reservation’ for the Indian people. Vernon Ah Kee’s light box commission, theendoflivingandbeginningofsurvival references Chief Seattle’s profound response to this offer and comments on the social and political inequalities that continue to confront Australia’s indigenous people today. Vernon Ah Kee was born in 1967 in Innisfail, Queensland, and is of the Kuku Yalandji, Waanji, Yidinji and Gugu Yimithirr peoples. He now lives and works in Brisbane. Ah Kee's work is primarily a critique of Australian popular culture, specifically the Black/White dichotomy. Recent solo exhibitions include 'talkwalktalk', Mackenzie Art Gallery, Canada (2009), and 'cant chant', Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane and touring (2007-11). Ah Kee represented Australia at the 2009 Venice Biennale in the group exhibition 'Once Removed'. Other group exhibitions include 'Revolutions: Forms that turn', Biennale of Sydney (2008); and 'unwritten', Asia Link & Art Gallery of New South Wales touring exhibition (2008-11). In 2009, the Institute of Modern Art published borninthisskin, the first major publication devoted to Ah Kee’s practice. Ah Kee's work is included in public collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; and the Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane. Vernon Ah Kee is represented by Milani Gallery, Brisbane, Australia. Theendoflivingandthebeginningofsurvival has been commissioned as part of our exibition The Future's Not What It Used To Be which can also be seen in the Gallery and Caffi Bar between 21 September and 4 November. |
