ROTAR
21.05.-09.07.2010

OPENING:
FRIDAY: 21.05.2010, 19-21 H

I will always keep to the theme of the spiral. I believe that one human life just suffices to depict this symbol in a way that comes close to perfection. With these words, the artist Rotar - who was born 1926 in Berlin and died 1999 in Dsseldorf - described the core theme of his art in a 1968 TV interview on Germanys channel 2.

Between the poles of Zero and Constructivist painting, the artist has created a painting oeuvre that in its abstract orientation was dedicated to one theme, but in fact introduced a varied visual range that seems infinite.
In 1950, Rotars compositional perseverance that gave an unbroken, painterly expression to the dynamism of the spiral form led him to experiment with different painting styles. He converted a phonograph into a painting tool, using its turntable as a paper support, painting on the paper while it turned. He constantly perfected this basic principle until in 1967 he patented a machine to full- and semi-automatically paint art pictures.
In the show we present works of his from 1965 to 1974. All the works have the identical size of 80 x 80 cm and all have been painted with the help of the painting machine. It is this formal correlation, namely its near-to serial principle, that sharpens our eye for the visual variety in the works. If some works seem almost haptic in their impasto paint application, others have a thin glaze of spirals that suggest a hardly tangible depth. These works pulsate before our eyes and yet, visually, are barely palpable.
Rotars working principle is analytical and often follows scholarly insights. It is all the more amazing that his paintings are anything other than sober, scientific illustrations, but can transmit an experience that is almost spiritual.

His most recent retrospective was at Museum Schloss Moyland in 2009, while the Reichsabtei Kornelimnster in Aachen is devoting a solo exhibition to him in 2010.
At ARTFORUM BERLN 2010 we will show Rotar in a solo presentation.
