Blow Up Modernists is the title of Gordon's recent and ongoing body of work of silkscreened paintings. Original catalogue images of modernist paintings by male artists such as Malevich, Mondrian, van Doesburg, Stella and Pollock are zoomed in on and blown up to a scale where the dot matrix of the printed page comes into focus, then translated into a stark black and white screenprints on canvas. Gordon is interested in the means by which time becomes evident in a printed surface: she searches for images of modernist paintings with cracks and signs of ageing in catalogues from the 1920's until the present, looking for evidence of physical deterioration in art history. Some works are photographed repeatedly in different catalogues, showing how the original changes over time and also in it's repeated representation. Gordon's silkscreened croppings and reconfigurations focus on these inconsistencies: a solid surface cracking, a square becoming a series of points, a straight line becoming ragged. Parallel openings at Kadel Willborn, Linn Lühn, Van Horn, Sies + Höke and KAI 10. |
