Title: Make It New John Artists: Duncan Campbell Opening: 20 January 7pm Exhibition runs from: 21 January 4 March 2011 Belfast Exposed is pleased to present Make It New John by Duncan Campbell, a film about the famous DeLorean sports car the DMC12, its creator John DeLorean and the workers of the Belfast-based car plant who built it in the early 1980s. The film deftly contrasts the DeLorean dream and the cars iconic status, with its spectacular downfall during a critical period in Northern Ireland's history. Make It New John is a film in four parts, which follows John DeLorean the son of an immigrant Romanian foundry worker from lowly beginnings along his stellar rise through General Motors and corporate America. At the height of his success, he persuaded the British Government to back his visionary new venture; to design a car from first principles and to build it in an area of high unemployment in Dunmurry, Northern Ireland, employing both Catholic and Protestant workers. Almost immediately beset by financial difficulties and allegations of embezzlement, DeLorean's attempts to keep the factory open became increasingly desperate and corrupt, eventually leading to his arrest by the FBI. The factory, which employed 2000 workers, closed in 1982 having produced just over 9,000 cars. As with Campbells earlier films, Bernadette (2008) and Falls Burns Malone Fiddles (2003), Make It New John is a composite of archival and fictional elements, which critically examines the documentary genre and the way stories are told and myths are made.
