TestBed 1 Michael Curran and Lucy Gunning Anthony Gross Lilli Hartmann Pil and Galia Kollectiv Dafna Talmor Joseph Walsh 3 March - 18 July 2010 Across all galleries Beaconsfield, 22 Newport Street, London SE11 6AY Opening Times: Tuesday � Sunday, 11am-5pm In the time of YouTube, video cameras and home-editing suites, the creative process has become more democratic, enabling people en masse to become not only viewers but �creators� and the gulf between cinematic and lo-fi film production to reduce. TestBed 1 reflects popular practice by commissioning six new digital screen-based works, to be made through readily available modes of production but supported in the context of a spacious, professional art space. >From March to late July commissioned artists will use Beaconsfield as a creative base in a series of residencies. During this time the public is invited to witness the act of making art as our galleries turn laboratories, turn performance and production sites. FlatScreen will provide a continuous interface with a programme of artists' films and linked material screening in Canteen Gallery 2 throughout the period. Residency 3rd March - 21st March Anthony Gross Upper Gallery 1 Kane�s Revolutions, 2010 Anthony Gross is occupying the site over three weeks and investigating local architecture and its cinematic implications. Themes of destruction and regeneration will be explored by looking at the changing faces of South London including The Heygate Estate and The Elephant and Castle and the long-standing industrial railway architecture around Beaconsfield�s Vauxhall premises. In the making of Kane�s Revolutions, the artist will experiment and test his own principles for film making, asking questions concerning the construction of filmic narrative. On 19 March, from 8�10pm, you are invited to a special exhibition and preview of Kane�s Revolutions. The evening will include a live electronic performance by ZON ON. Canteen Gallery 2: Flatscreen Anthony Gross: Columbo Eats Columbo, 2009 Duration: 28 mins. Single screen 16:9, HDV and computer animation Columbo Eats Columbo, 2009 preceded Kane�s Revolutions and is the first film in which Gross uses live action sequences, mixed with computer animation. The film uses the Columbo detective series as a basis for examining a subject close to the artist's heart, the era of early computer technology and graphics coinciding with Gross� teenage years. In the film, Columbo becomes anxious as he fears the loss of the analogue world he inhabits, but he can also sense the liberating possibilities of the dawn of a new age. No longer are these sounds in the private space of your home, but collide with bus interiors and the public looking in various directions. Try to turn up the bass on these tinny speakers � there isn�t any� Rise of Treble, Ode to Bass, film script, Joseph Walsh 2010 28 May, across all galleries TestBed Performance Event 7-9pm Inside-out Cave. Lilli Hartmann and guests � Jiska Morgenthal, Stephan Barette, Tom Woolner, Lara Garcia-Reyne, Nick Brooks and Cecilie Gravesen � host an evening of narration, song, screenings and installations. Rise of Treble, Ode to Bass � LIVE. Joseph Walsh�s TestBed film commission plays out as a live performance with actors Christine Ajisafe, Ela Ciecierska, Loli Hidden, Durassie Kiangangu. 2 June � 11 July, Arch Gallery 3 Soundtrap V: Duncan Whitley in residence Whitley�s practice combines an ethnographic interest with a passion for sound in all its forms and nuances. He focuses these pursuits by honing in on particular subjects that are rich in both human and aural data. The Soundtrap V residency will produce a score for a new composition based on original field recordings made in Seville. Duncan Whitley will be the fifth artist to be commissioned for Soundtrap, Beaconsfield�s annual portfolio scheme for new sonic works. 2 June � 17 October John Wynne in Newspeak: British Art Now: Part One at The Saatchi Gallery The first sound work to be acquired by the Saatchi collection � 300 speakers, Pianola, vacuum cleaner, audio amplifiers, hard disc recorder, speaker wire, suction hose, piano roll � was commissioned by Beaconsfield for Soundtrap IV: John Wynne, 2009. 6 June � 27 June, Sundays 11am�1pm Bob and Roberta Smith at The Big Shed The Big Shed, Stanny House Farm, High Street Iken, Suffolk IP12 2EY T: 01728 688 139 Hugh Pilkington with Beaconsfield and Paul and Loulou Cooke present This Artist is Deeply Dangerous, new and recent work by Bob and Roberta Smith. This Artist is Deeply Dangerous was commissioned as part of Bob and Roberta Smith�s Factory Outlet at Beaconsfield, 2009/10. 22 June � 18 July, Upper Gallery 1 and Yard TestBed 1: Dafna Talmor in residence SpaceShip Earth, 2010 Dafna Talmor�s work addresses notions of space and place and the precarious balance between the personal and the universal. Making reference to transitional aspects of contemporary life, her work explores people�s investment in the spaces they inhabit. Through her work, she is interested in exploring utopian models and alluding to idealised spaces. For TestBed 1 Talmor expands her practice of photography and video to include events and collaborations. 24 � 27 August, Gallery Yard TestBed 1: Dafna Talmor SpaceShip Earth Eco Build For her recent TestBed 1 residency Dafna Talmor explored a hybrid of utopian models and aspirations, utilising Beaconsfield as a centre for recycling, production, and community workshops - a training ground for a better world elsewhere. A physical manifestation of these ideas is embodied in a specially designed eco-structure being built in the Gallery Yard in collaboration with Mark Pavey. Incorporating rammed earth arches and a living roof, the structure will remain as a residue of the project, representing a quasi-settlement, symbolically claiming space through a shared ownership scheme offered to the general public. The second phase of the eco-build will take place in the yard during late August, entirely constructed through donated materials and labour. |
