MAIN SPACE: On Being an Exhibition A group exhibition curated by Joseph del Pesco Works by: BGL, Conrad Bakker, Beth Campbell, Valerie Hegarty, Germaine Koh, Isola and Norzi, Chadwick Rantanen, Derek Sullivan, Anne Walsh/Chris Kubick, Lee Walton, and Laurel Woodcock. Public program by the Center for Urban Pedagogy. On Being an Exhibition takes Michael Asher�s thinking and work as a point of departure toward developing an exhibition that leverages the pre-conditioning of the viewer and the physical language of the gallery. The artworks in On Being an Exhibition consider the contextual materials of the gallery and draw awareness to one's experience of the gallery as mediated, interrupted and animated by artworks. The exhibition simultaneously proposes to complicate the idea of an exhibition as a packaged cultural production that is both promoted and critiqued. Joseph del Pesco is a member of Artists Space's newly formed Curatorial College, a body of three curators who oversee the programs at Artists Space. The Curatorial College will be collaborating with other curators, as well as artists, to produce compelling exhibitions and public programs during the course of their three-year tenure. This new model seeks to engage the community and to enrich the dialog between artists, curators, and other cultural practitioners in the field of contemporary art and architecture. CAMPARI Project Space: Episode A new work by Judit Kurt�g Hungarian artist Judit Kurt�g�s videos foster a consciousness of time in which the moving image is a keeper at the border between the immediate and memory. Her videos have been shown in Paris, Amsterdam, Milan, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Reykjavik among other locations. This will be her first exihibition in New York. Architecture and Design Project Space: The House that Herman Built A project by Jackie Sumell with Herman Wallace The House That Herman Built began as a conversation and evolved into a collaboration between the artist and activist Jackie Sumell and the inmate and Black Panther, Herman Wallace, who has been in solitary confinement at Angola in Lousiana since 1972. It is a four-year correspondence that has grown out of Wallace's response to Sumell's catalytic question "What kind of a house does a man who has lived in a six-foot-by-nine-foot cell for over 30 years dream of?" Through extensive letter writing, occasional phone calls, and visits to prison, Jackie has been giving voice to Herman�s imagination. The project has manifested several different modalities, including over 300 letters, dozens of drawings, a CAD video of Herman�s dream house, and a full-scale reproduction of Herman�s cell. |
