Artists Space is pleased to present Vitamin Kids for Trio A, a one-night event with Georgia Sagri on Friday, June 19 at 8pm Sagri, joined by an ensemble of high school hip-hop dancers (Ronald Coleman, Leny Felix, Robert Heyward, Jomal Jacques, and Jasmine Kamara), will improvise a live composition based on Yvonne Rainer's 1966 dance sequence, Trio A. Archival footage of Trio A found on YouTube--re-filmed by Sagri from her laptop and projected here--will overlay the dance sequence. These components develop a tension between the actions of the body, the vocabulary of street dance, the perception of historical influence, and the live presence of an audience. The result is a study not only of formal elements, but of the structures and dynamics inherent to social forms of dance. Sagri's investigation of movement, both live and re-broadcast, introduces various sources and targets of experience, while similarly casting her in the mutable role of artist, director, participant and observer. An open rehearsal, broadcast via Skype to the Festival Ct Court, Paris, will take place at 1pm and will include a conversation between Sagri and Nathalie Angls. Georgia Sagri (b. 1979, Athens, Greece) lives and works in New York. She received an MFA from Columbia University in 2008. Recent solo projects include Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is and If Approaching Pain Gives You a Way of Recovering the Memory of Flesh Then Go Elsewhere at On Stellar Rays, New York; Yze Alone, at the The National Theater, Athens, and Edtaonisl at Anthony Reynolds Gallery, London. Artists Space thanks The Heartbreak Crew and Betances Community Center/Aspira of New York for their involvement. |
