Brian Calvin Head Backroom Gallery: Saul Fletcher Opening Reception: Thursday, December 10, 2009 from 6 - 8 p.m. December 10 � January 16, 2010 REVIEW January 12, 2010 The New Yorker | Saul Fletcher ART: SAUL FLETCHER There are only eight little photographs in this British photographer�s show, but their impact belies their diminutive scale. Fletcher has always worked small, often with unique Polaroid prints, and his images have been dark, introspective, and soulful�odd, allusive tangles of autobiography and myth. Five new pieces in muted color were made using a wall in the artist�s studio, where layers of distressed plaster and paint provide an Abstract Expressionist backdrop to constructions of twigs, fabric, and the occasional goat skull or marionette. Symbols of faith and fate are joined by a more playfully sketched bird and dog, as if Fletcher were rebuilding his world from scratch, bit by hard-won bit. Through Jan. 16 |
