Carsten Höller WITH Nous sommes heureux d’accueillir Carsten Höller pour sa cinquième exposition personnelle chez Air de Paris. L’ensemble des œuvres de l’exposition Avec sont réalisées «avec» un artiste, Philippe Parreno, un architecte, François Roche, un photographe, Attilio Maranzano, un parfumeur, Ben Gorham, un maquettiste, Rigobert Nimi, un taxidermiste, Yves Gaumetou et des jumeaux non dénommés. Le degré du « avec » est pourtant variable, et se situe quelque part entre une addition à une œuvre existante d'une autre, une vraie collaboration, ou une commande à un producteur. A l’œuvre dès la désignation de leur auteur, les paradoxes du double le sont tout autant dans les pièces présentées, que dans les effets qu’elles produisent : perception du réel, altération du concept du soi, doute généralisé... Manèges, animaux colorés, habitations, modificateurs d’humeurs, images dédoublées et jumeaux autant d’opérateurs de l’incertitude, dont Carsten Höller est à l’heure actuelle l’un des plus efficace agent. Son doute est une proposition de la recherche d’une porte de sortie de la logique utilitariste, un appel à une expédition au delà de la lourdeur du présent. Dans cette exposition, il évite d'accrocher des œuvres faites «seulement par lui» et jugés prêtes à montrer au public; il évite le grand geste du grand artiste qui sait et qui démontre… au travers du «avec», un doute reste au sujet de ce que l'artiste sait, de sa proposition, en évitant la singularité du créateur et en ainsi salissant l'œuvre de plus d'une façon de penser. Carsten Höller a exposé pour la première fois chez Air de Paris à Nice an 1991, au sein du Xmas Show. Le MACRO (Rome) lui a récemment consacré une exposition personnelle, ainsi que le New Museum de New York, le Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum für Gegenwart (Berlin), le Museum Boijmans van Beuningen (Rotterdam), le Kunsthaus Bregenz et la Tate Modern, Turbine Hall (Londres) ... Il a également participé à de nombreuses expositions collectives, à la Maison Rouge, au Centre Pompidou (Paris), la Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane)… Il fut aussi le commissaire d’expositions, au Magasin (Grenoble), au Garage CCC (Moscou), la Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst (Leipzig) et Lux Gallery (London). - We are delighted to present Carsten Höller’s fifth solo exhibition at Air de Paris. The group of works making up Carsten Höller's fifth solo exhibition at Air de Paris, 'With', have been made 'with': with artist Philippe Parreno, architect François Roche, photographer Attilio Maranzano, perfumer Ben Gorham, model-maker Rigobert Nimi, taxidermist Yves Gaumetou and a pair of unnamed twins. The actual quantity of 'with' varies, however, falling within a range including additions to an existing work, authentic collaborations, and straight-out commissions. At work from the moment the maker was chosen, the duality paradoxes are as evident in the exhibits as in the effects they produce: shifts in perception of reality, alteration of consciousness, generalised doubt, etc. Carousels, coloured animals, dwellings, mood modifiers, double images and twinning: all generators of the uncertainty of which Carsten Höller is currently one of the most effective exponents. His form of doubt is a proposal to go looking for utilitarian logic's emergency exit, a summons to an expedition searching beyond the burden of the present. Here he avoids presenting works made 'only by him' and deemed ready for public display; here he avoids the gesture of the great artist who knows and shows; here 'with' means a persistent doubt as to what the artist knows, as to what he is offering by avoiding the singularity of the creator and thus 'sullying' the work with more than one thought mode. Carsten Höller exhibtited at Air de Paris (Nice) for the first time in 1991, in the Xmas Show. He recently had solo shows at MACRO (Roma), New Museum (New York), Hauptbahnhof Museum für Gegenwart (Berlin), Museum Boijmans van Beuningen (Rotterdam), Kunsthaus Bregenz and Tate Modern, Turbine Hall (London) … His work has been widely exhibited in venues including la Maison Rouge, Centre Pompidou, (Paris), Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre, (London), MACRO (Rome), Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane)… He also curated exhibitions at Le Magasin (Grenoble), Garage CCC (Moscow), Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst (Leipzig) and Lux Galley (London).
