PALIMPSEST Sayre Gomez, Shila Khatami, Tom Owen, Stefan Sandner
June 22nd to August 3rd 2013 Opening: June 22nd 2013 - 7 to 9pm
Kavi Gupta BERLIN is proud to present Palimpsest, a four-person exhibition of painting featuring Sayre Gomez, Shila Khatami, Tom Owen, and Stefan Sandner. The exhibition places in dialogue four artists whose work is representative of the fact that art history and in particular that the history and practice of painting is fundamentally quotational, provisional, and annotational, an architecture whose structure is enmeshed in a process of deletion and recovery, of erasure and retrotranscription. The included artists were invited to participate in the exhibition for their work's insight into what it means to make contemporary art when the palimpsestic histories of antiquity are again being resurrected in an age of digitalization.
Sayre Gomez (b. 1982 in Chicago, US) lives and works in Chicago. Known for his technically precise airbrush paintings and text works, Gomez has recently been included in a number of group exibitions in Europe and America, including "Always Yours, Des Objets Manqués, Des Monuments" (2013) at Balice Hertling in Paris, FR, "Kiss Me Deadly" (2013) at Paradise Row in London, UK, "Deep Space" (2012) at François Ghebaly Gallery in Los Angeles, US, and "L'idee Fixe" (2012) at Stever Turner Contemporary in Los Angeles, US. Gomez recently had his debut solo exhibition in New York entitled "Slippery" (2013) at The Hole and is currently working toward a solo exhibition with Los Angeles' François Ghebaly Gallery.
Shila Khatami (b. 1976 in Saarbrucken, DE) lives and works in Berlin. Khatami, a graduate of the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, has shown widely in Europe, both in commerical and institutional settings. Recent group exhibitions include "BYOB - (Entre)ouverture" (2012) at Palais de Tokyo in Paris, and "Punkt.Systeme" (2012) at the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum in Ludwigshafen. This summer Khatami will present her third solo exhibition at Galerie Susanna Kulli in Zurich.
Tom Owen (b. 1982 in Swindon, UK) lives and works in London. Owen earned his BA in painting from the Slade School of Fine Art, and has recently completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Fine Art from the Royal Academy in London. Recent presentations of Owen's work include a group exhibition, "Modern and Compact Atmosphere," (2013) and a solo exhibition, "New Work," (2011) both at Studio 1.1 in London. "Palimpsest" will be the first time Owen participates in an exhibition outside of the UK.
