… Like traditional round sculptures, works of such a nature usually concentrate on appearance, changes in the ‘characteristics of every aspect’ and the transformation of 3-D light and shadow effects. As a result these sculptures were placed in the center of the show, enabling viewers to scrutinize all round so that all messages conveyed would be received for interpretation and evaluations of the work. In term of aesthetic styling one can easily recognize the ‘down to earth’ character inherent to these works because the elements of them show the closeness to worldly things. To viewers, segments of wooden furniture, stones, metal wires used in industry and man-made wooden blocks may be no more than common objects with a different touch. Through Tsai Ken’s hands however, and his innovation, they have metamorphosed into elegant forms. These works surely display the artist’s habit of cherishing things and objects. It also shows his attempt to integrate life with art. If his initial strategy is to integrate art with life, the key point seems not how he should combine these ordinary objects but how can he rectify the attitude of isolated pride which has for so long prevailed in art and bring to it a human touch?
