Posing these simple questions, Look-alikes 2001-2004, is an installation of 20 intimate video portraits (and stills) exploring the psyches of everyday people who consider themselves look-alikes to the stars or who are often mistaken for them. In these complex and revealing portraits, the effects of American media culture and its obsession with celebrity and the commodified icon are observed in close relation to changing expressions of individual identity. How do we see ourselves in this global consumer economy? How do others see us? In many portraits, it becomes difficult to discern between sincere presentation and a well-acted out performance. The work blurs distinctions between the authentic and the fake, reality and image, and brings to light the constant negotiation between self and world.
