Site-specific installation at Spital Square, London Stop responses to the changng environment surrounding this area. STOP is a commentary on how we constantly receive instruction from public signs. this stie-specifc work uses the entire interior surface, floor, ceiling, walls and the columns masked with fluorescent yellow tape, which were laid out in a pattern, culminating and expanding from one point in the room. Sign saying, 'Do not enter' at the entrance confuses the view entering the installtion and then discovers the surrounding signs such as 'do not sleep', do not work', do not die', do not trust', etc. There is an element of the rediculous used by the artist to demonstrate how we are perpectually under control in the public area. |
Seema Rao was born in India and studied in India and USA. After Graduating from Goldsmiths College in 2000, she has been living in London. Her inspiration is based on the placement of the self and the figure in relation to the immensity of society within the context of urban living. It is this idea of collective humanity and interactions with one another in the public realm she finds extremely evocative. Her work mainly involves installations utilising video, and sculpture.
