Initially inspired by the artists of the New York School and the philosophy and esthetics of Chinese and Japanese art, Robert Schatz has engaged the tenets and practices of abstraction since the late 1980s, pursuing his interest in the structure of pictorial space and the poetics of markmaking. His drawings, monotypes and paintings explore the grace, sensuality, and expressive potential of line.

Thomas Sokolowski, Director of the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has described his work as << lush skeins of finely measured and almost mathematically paced staves of pure feeling. >>

Schatz's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in the United States and Europe, with several solo shows in New York and Paris. His art is included in private collections in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, and is also represented in the collections of the Fogg Art Museum of Harvard University; the U.S. Department of State; Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas; the Art Institute of Boston; and Pfizer, Inc.

Schatz was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and as a young man studied at the Baum School of Art there. He attended the University of Scranton as an undergraduate, and earned a B.A. magna cum laude in history and philosophy. He continued with fine art studies at Massachusetts College of Art and the Art Institute of Boston. He currently lives and works in New York City, where he is represented by The Phatory, LLC.
