My work includes drawings, paintings and sculpture involving, in one way or another, plastic figures within the landscape. These figures or clusters of figures are part of imaginary � gamescapes,� where the characters are incorporated into a game environment where all can be subject to chance, luck, and competition. The idea that the hero representations of the Western World can and are produced by the millions with cheap plastic, most likely in China or Taiwan, is something I find quite fascinating.
The perpetual thirst for conflict of one society vs. another, one civilization eclipsing another....build, divide, conquer, fall, repeat.....
Hero images give people someone to look up to and emulate. Where do the lines blur between plastic/movie reality and true life? Are heroes obsolete today? The whole idea of heroes and hero-worship fascinates me. How they are created, how they are represented and mass-produced intrigues me. They are used, re-used, and ultimately thrown away or forgotten. Also, the way such toys are mass marketed provides a convenient way to measure ourselves in relation to such persona. Perhaps the modern day monument is the plastic action figure. Is conflict is ultimately necessary for human evolution to progress?
