For the over a decade I have been photographing continuously, always exactly from the same position, lens pointed toward the Atlantic Ocean.
The photographic project, “Oceanscapes – One View”, supports my investigation into the correlation between Romanticism, memory and landscape in the context of our current socio-political awareness, in effect, creating a consciousness of the transitory state of values and our perception of reality.
The ocean, which covers nearly three-fourths of our planet, carries the whole Earth's history. The healing trace minerals of the ocean represent our collective memory. Water is the most important element on our earth and it is our duty to save it from the ongoing destruction due to pollution!
The ocean is also a focal point for reflection and meditation. Engaging with the ocean from an elevated position is similar to the experience we have vis-a-vis the cinema screen. Our eyes and minds are able to go beyond the horizon and come back to the bouncing waves at the shores. We are able to follow the rhythm of the motion from 'here' (hier), where we are spectators, to 'there’, at which point we are able to project ourselves 'elsewhere' (woanders).
Yet, it is always the same point of view and the same location which reveals all this to us.
