I work in series of paintings, which variously reflect my interest in social dynamics and/or with the history of art. In these works, I employ a variety of formal approaches in a strategy of open-ended, critical reflection of societal issues In Groundwork, a series begun in 2014, my interest in abstraction in a post-modern framework continues. In contrast, or in response to, the self contained formalism of modernism- I find interest in schematic patterns that additionally can be understood as social signifiers. My general approach is a focus on prosaic patterns that can, when presented in this formal manner, yield to reflection beyond their routine function. The series Groundwork, composed of shoe tread patterns, is intended to resonate with the movement of human migrations.
