One Thing Against Another

This exhibition invites five artists to make temporary sculptures in unison with particular buildings. Whether we find them propped in windows, leaning in corners, concealing entrances or suspended from beams, the works playfully rub-up against their immediate physical environment for support.

While the exhibiting artists each have distinct approaches, certain dialogues may be enjoyed between their works, such as an inventive preoccupation with short-lived or everyday materials. There is a tendency to create works whose method of realisation is explicitly self-evident and much of the work has been made in-situ. The artists also share an infectious enthusiasm for provisional arrangements and minimal means. In this way they have inherited a slapstick language of sculpture that doesn’t need a plinth or a frame. Finally, the exhibition finds that artists and viewers alike can identify with that child-like spirit of experimentation in simply leaning one thing against another.
