The images are sourced from current mass produced consumer catalogues, television and film. Domestic furniture, chairs and table lamps are repeatedly distilled andrenderedinto hard edged emotionless motifs that metaphoricallycan stand infor parts of the self. The light patterns, shadows and negative space take on and become strangely distorted dopplegngers, disposessed yet simultaneously connected to their literal hosts. Constructed within this alienated matrix are the recycled techniques, iconography and colourisation of mid-sixties British pop.The paintings position themselves within this historical context as nostalgic experiments, re-activating pre-counterculture optimism and mixing it with a darker almost post-human contemporary reality. |
