Along with many other animals, we humans use architecture as a response to our environment. It enhances and enriches our daily experience and chances of survival. This work, from my recent series of paintings, Thin Walls, continues my ongoing interest in how we create a built world to relate to the natural world. Our homes, buildings, cities, etc. are really an interface we use to modify the natural world for our purposes.

Whether we’re considering a cave or a mansion for a home, we seek to meet some basic needs. Safety and security, storage, privacy and the like are all considered but the primary intent is to keep the outside out. The reality is that nature has a way of eroding the barrier. The wild outside gets in. Ultimately I’m interested in the dynamic interaction between these two worlds.

In my art practice, I begin with rough sketches, thumbnail drawings and studies. I scan these and add found digital images. This collage style of working continues to be apparent in the final work. I think the process of building the images in the computer and on panel mirrors the sequence of actions used in the actual physical construction of a structure in the landscape.
