Beverley Hood is an artist based in Edinburgh and has worked with the web and interactive media since the mid 90’s, creating projects that examine how we negotiate, identify and interpret transitions between real and virtual space. Her work frequently addresses, explores and exploits the limitations and parameters set by programmers and developers of software and hardware, often working at the periphery of intended uses, teasing and tugging at the edges to explore the implication of the imposed boundaries. Over the past five years her work has explored digital portraiture, interactivity, 3D and animation. This has been part of an ongoing body of work continuing the long tradition of artists’ representation, in particular self-representation in art history, expanding upon this genre within the context of 21st century technology and techniques. |

First Person, 2006, Game art project
|
First Person is a 3D computer game and art project. Its protagonist, the game’s character, is a portrait of the artist created with a 3D games character designer. The portrait, a distinctive figure clad in vibrant red, exists within a monochrome 3D world, created with the Torque game engine.
The character embodies and guides the viewer around the building, negotiating the space in a games-like way, jumping, strafing, etc with discrete extensions to real human prowess. |
