Andrew Litten - born 1970, Aylesbury UK. An early interest in expressionist art lead to evening classes in life drawing whilst still at school. http://andrewlitten.yolasite.com/ Litten began Art College but found it a restricting and claustrophobic experience so did not persevere with art education. Continued to created art in private. Travelled the UK to find inspiration within ‘commonplace life’ away from the 'guarded' impersonal language of high art. http://littenearly1990s.weebly.com/ Aiming to convey an emotive poignancy in representations of the ordinary; this small scale humanistic work was a deliberate contrast to established contemporary art which at the time was dominated by the ambitious surge of the YBA's. Created work under differing names and also lived under different names to intentionally obscure notions of authorship, self-hood and ambition.
Litten began employment in photographic studios during the early 1990’s in London and later in Oxford where visits to Richard Hamilton’s studio encouraged a renewed interest in ambitious figurative painting. Moved to Cornwall, and in 2003 took the decision to begin exhibiting with DICK THE DOG, Penzance, UK with the solo exhibition ‘I THINK I WAS JUST TALKING TO MYSELF’. In the same year Litten was included in an exhibition of nudes in New York City (along with Epstein and Renoir) which saw a review in the NEW YORK TIMES. Solo exhibitions 2005-2008 ‘ORDINARY BODIES’, ‘FREE RANGE’, ‘CONNECT?’ and ‘PAINTINGS’ with GOLDFISH, Penzance UK. First major exhibit in London was with the work ‘DOG BREEDER’ which was created as an anti-art statement objecting to the predominance impersonal painting that dominates the art dealer lead contemporary art world. ‘DOG BREEDER’; personalised with real pubic hair, depicts dogs on heat rushing to the dog/man. www.dogbreeder.weebly.com DOG BREEDER was exhibited in a project space in Vyner Street http://www.limewharf.org/ in 2007 during the week of Frieze Art Fair.
Andrew Litten has exhibited in numerous international art fairs including Red Dot Miami, Red Dot New York, Art Toronto and Art Chicago with JILL GEORGE GALLERY, London. Exhibited in curated exhibitions in Berlin, Dublin, London, Milwaukee and New York. Has work in the MILWAUKEE ART MUSEUM, USA and MUSEUM OF EVERYTHING, LONDON. Was included in ‘No Soul For Sale’ an exhibition of independents in 2010 at TATE MODERN. Andrew Litten was Guest artist with L-13 Light Industrial Workshop, London for a solo exhibition ‘Guest’ 2012. Recently exhibited with WW GALLERY at the 54th VENICE BIENNALE.
