Libby Seaberg

Courting contradiction, many of my works are hybridsof sculpture and painting, print and drawing; of metamorphosing forms; of diverse materials. Although my works are generally abstract, they also resemble living things and often relate to my bodys own properties, gestures, and surroundings. To capture these qualities, I work improvisationally, joining disparate materials into a variety of organic shapes, patterns, textures, and words. A large number of my recent works also derive their shapes and printed surfaces from magnified views of human protoplasm, photographed through a microscope.
Inspired by these images of sometimes lethal tissue and cells, stained in the laboratory with colored dyes to increase their visibility, my latest works further merge the realms of inner and outer structure; color, luster, and volume; abstraction and representation; biology and biography; and text and image.
