Floating Emblems
|
I see painting as a reflective space and I am using my studio, the gathering place of my thoughts and actions and the resulting objects and images from my time and attention, as a metaphor for potentiality. Through painting, multiple realities and thoughts are joined and made whole for the moment of the painted image.

I am fascinated with imagined spaces and narrative. My current painting is based on French art history and the romantic ideal of artists at work in order to investigate painting practice as a state of absorption. I try to make seemingly impossible connections with my inner dialogue and the histories of others.

My paintings operate on the level of symbolic dream, in which multiple spaces and realities intermingle. My intention is to practice painting in such a way that allows me to connect to the Divine in both process and imagery, and thus regard my work as an ongoing and evolving picture of consciousness.

I use recycled cardboard in the construction of my sculptural objects such as Longhouse/Chapel/Tower. Cardboard is a ubiquitous material, emblematic of waste and consumption, but also has intrinsic warmth that lends itself to my interest in human made objects and images. The traditional gesso is made of marble dust and rabbit skin glue, and creates a beautiful, creamy but strong surface and emanates a kind of naturalness that I value.
