Edie WInograde's latest and ongoing photographic series captures unique moments and juxtapositions in iconic places where the relationships between the past and present are apparent in the landscape itself. Humanity, nature and history collide and coincide in the imagery owing to photography’s ability to compress time and space.
The chosen sites represent fixed points in the American consciousness that are held as national symbols. The widely understood cultural references these landscapes convey– of nature, of conquest, of the Sublime, of Manifest Destiny, etc.—allow their stories, in history and legend, to emerge.
The photographs, anchored by the natural and technical infrastructure that sets the contexts for the underlying mythologies, bundle together the scene and its history into one view. Do people seek out these landscapes to recreate a real experience of what happened and to thus share a collective memory? Winograde captures this sometimes cathartic transportation into collective memory as it’s subtly conveyed through body language or in unnatural elements in the landscape.
