TOZ (Temporary Open Zone/Towner Open Zine) Installation Participatory work for East Sussex Open. 2015 Scanlon&Grivell; proposed a work that questions the exercise of aesthetic judgement and the processes involved in selection and rejection. They wrote to the 298 artists that were not selected for the 2015 East Sussex Open asking if they would like to participate in this proposal to re-present their submissions. Ninety said yes, a few said no, many didn't respond. the participating artists' submissions were then reproduced as double page spreads for audience members to select and assemble as a 'take- away' Zine. |

Each artist was represented by one image with their statements, in full where possible. On the back of each artist's spread, additional material was presented that had been devised through research and discussion with artists and judges. |
Audience members were invited for a small fee to assemble a zine to take away, in which the spreads were intersected in a series of random or considered juxtapositions of image and texts. The myriad permutations and resulting combinations raised questions about our opinions, tastes, expectations, understanding and capacity for judgement in art and wider culture.
