Cheerleaders.Diversity in uniformity is what fascinated Finke about his chosen subject: cheerleading competitions, photographed in New York City, Pennsylvania and Florida. He followed competitors from 175 schools all over the US, witnessing moments of emotion as they practiced, prayed and cried. In order to reveal the girls’ identity he focused on their subtle expressions and gestures. While every cheerleader is created in the image of the team to perform and look the same, these girls are also teenagers addressing such issues as social behavior and sexuality. ‘In my Photos,‘ says Finke, ‘these teens struggle between being part of a group and defining themselves.’
