AWARD
The Mark Tanner Sculpture Award, Standpoint Gallery, London
Deadline: 31 May 2007

Call for entries for yearly award with a total value of £10,000. Will result in a solo exhibition in September 2009 at Standpoint Gallery.

The Mark Tanner Sculpture Award is now the largest sculpture prize of its kind in the UK. It is unique in its combination of offering both financial support towards the production of new work and a solo exhibition to an exceptional emerging sculptor.

Originated in 2001, The Tanner award increased to a total of £10,000 in 2005. £6,000 goes direct to the receiving artist towards the production of new work, and £4,000 funds and promotes the solo exhibition held at Standpoint Gallery the following year.

The Tanner award is a partnership project by Standpoint Gallery and the charitable trust set up in memory of the sculptor Mark Tanner, who trained at St Martins and was one of the first artists to show at Standpoint. He died in 1998 after a long illness.

Standpoint Gallery is an independent, artist run project and exhibition space with charitable status. The Tanner award forms an important constituent part of our core aims - to act as a platform for emerging artists outside the commercial gallery system, to support the diversity and vibrancy of artistic production, to promote excellence and commitment in the artist as maker, and to provide an arena for artists' networks and professional development.

The award is aimed at sculptors based in Greater London who are making ambitious, outstanding work within fine art practice, and we are particularly interested in work that demonstrates a commitment to process and material.

COMMISSION
Launch of Great North Run Cultural Programme - Moving Image Commission 2009, UK
Deadline : Monday 9th June 2008.

To celebrate the silver anniversary of the BUPA Great North Run in 2005, the Great North Run Cultural Programme was established, which featured the film broken time by Jane and Louise Wilson. As part of the legacy of this film and part of an ongoing commitment to exploring the relationship between sport and art, the annual Great North Run Moving Image Commission was announced.

Supported by Arts Council England, this major commission awards an experienced artist or film- maker £30,000 to create a new work which responds to and captures the spirit of one of the world's top sporting events. The films are premiered in the North East in September as part of the Great North Run Cultural Programme, with an extract screened on the BBC as part of the live coverage of the BUPA Great North Run. There are plans to tour all of the works nationally and internationally from the end of 2008.

Organisers of the Great North Run Cultural Programme are delighted to announce the call out for submissions for the Moving Image Commission for 2009.

Artists are invited to submit an expression of interest in the first instance consisting of a brief outline of their approach to the commission including budget and CV. Closing date for expressions of interest is Monday 9th June 2008.

>From these submissions a shortlist of three artists will be invited to develop their proposals with the selected artist being announced publicly in September and the work to be completed and delivered by September 2009.

PROPOSALS
Globalization and Identity, Gallery Galzenica, Croatia (Hrvatska)
Deadline: June 15, 2008

In the early 1990's, two major changes were taking place in Croatia: political and territorial independence from ex Yugoslavia and the first wave of economic globalisation. As you may know, globalisation is the economic model that, after the break up of European socialist countries, with the help of the new technologies (the Internet, mobile networks etc.), created new ways of making profit. Two opposite social processes were the consequence of that: degradation of national economies and proliferation of particular cultural identities.

During 1990's, the countries of Middle and southeast Europe were in search of their position on the new map of Europe and thus found themselves in a paradox situation of parallel decentralization of economy and nationalization of culture. The more cultural practice seemed traditional and particular, the more it represented self-identification model for newly formed countries. Although impossible for the global application, the model of so-called traditional culture became the pattern applicable to national culture through various local and group identities. The expansion of local media, equality of dialects, World Music and lifestyle culture are only few of the phenomena that could not exist without tension between global and national.

The 2009 programme of the Gallery Galzenica casts light on questions such as what the difference between Europe of nations and Europe of regions is. Are these countries, once "behind the iron curtain", and their great national stories anachronism or last, though unrepresentative evidence that modernism is an open-end process (Habermas)?

Furthermore, is the issue of individual, local or national identity rather an interest of marketing and profit making than the process of personal and social development? Does globalisation actually encourage fundamentalism, chauvinism and xenophobia? If yes, what are possible reasons for multiculturalism? Where has the idea of cosmopolitism disappeared? Is the only choice we have the one between bad and worse?

We invite you to send your proposal for participation to galerija.galzenica@globalnet.hr by 15 June 2008.

Gallery Website

Klaudio Stefancic, a curator and a director of the Gallery Galzenica, and Ivana Hanacek, a curator assistant, will carefully review all the proposals. All submitters will be informed about their application by 1 July 2008.
