EXHIBITIONS
BAC Gallery, Brooklyn, NY Call for Submissions

June 5 - August 8, 2008 Curator: Dana Gentile

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: March 7, 2008

BAC Gallery seeks submissions from artists who are interested in exploring connections between their own work, other work in the show, and the viewer for The Line That Connects You To Me. Although there isn't a "theme" in the usual sense, the exhibition will have a subject-the viewer. Works submitted should provide emotional, intellectual, and physical interaction, enabling the viewer to become as much a part of the exhibition as the artwork itself. The Line That Connects You To Me will challenge conventional spectatorship by physically involving the viewer. In the exhibition space, beginning with the displayed word "You," lines will be drawn to connect the works of art together. The line will go above and below eye level, encouraging the viewer to interact with the exhibition, whether that means crouching down on the floor or standing on their tiptoes in order to experience the work. The line will continue down the hall, around doorways, and throughout the exhibition space where it will end at the word "Me." These two words, "You" and "Me," will ultimately refer not only to the viewer and the artist, but also to the curator, the art world, the BAC employee working in the office, and even other people outside the gallery space.

Biological Imperative, Gallery Aferro, Newark NY
Deadline 15 April 2008

Biological Imperative curated by Emma Wilcox on display June 14-July 26, 2008, with full color catalog

Artists working in any and all media are invited to submit existing work, or propose new work, in response to any of the following:

Things that just won't die, multiples, fecundity, regeneration, splicing, graft, hybridization, miscegenation, do it yourself genetic testing kits, "she's not my sister she's my daughter", "one drop," 3/5 of a person, genetically modified foods, bio art, the prosecution of bio artists, the undead, the semi-living, Jonestown, the elderly woman who got a DNR order tattooed on her chest, the undying popularity of zombie films, Scopolamine, and of course, well, bunny rabbits.

Blackhorromovies.com, according to its creator, Mark H. Harris," is the culmination of my life experiences as a black horror movie fan: seeing hundreds of black people stabbed, chopped up, and eviscerated without so much as a "rest in peace" or even a "sorry, my bad," and finding scant acknowledgment of the role of black people in horror films (Zombies anyone?)"

The Tissue Culture & Art Project is a collective dealing with "serious ethical questions regarding a near future when objects that are partly alive and partly constructed exist, and when animal organs will be transplanted into humans. What kind of relationships we will form with such objects? How are we going to treat animals with human DNA?"

In 1965's "How to Explain Pictures to a Dead Hare" Joseph Beuys held a dead hare in his arms and walked around an art gallery talking about art to the animal. Rabbits function as food, pest and pet for humans, and symbolize something that dies again and again, only to be reborn.

Submissions due April 15.
Notification of acceptance by May 1.
Delivery by May 24.
Materials for catalog may be requested earlier than work delivery.

FESTIVAL
Dislocate 08 - Festival for Art, Technology, Locality - Tokyo/Yokohama
Deadline: 14th April

www.dis-locate.net

Dislocate questions our notions of place and location in the face of perpetual motion through multifaceted environments. The velocity of this passage is accelerated through new technologies, but as a result how does this impact upon our encounter with place and our attempt to communicate this to elsewhere?

Through an exhibition, symposium and workshop series Dislocate will examine this encounter and communication, taking a journey through surrounding spaces and exploring our transient connections.

Propelled through so many spaces with such momentum, mobility brings freedoms but also responsibilities. While in this state of passage how do we decide which spaces to engage with and what is our dialogue with them?

Considering the locations we constantly carry with us, the interaction between the internal/external, virtual/physical, real/imaginary, our locatedness is multiple, fragmentary and in constant flux. Nomadic in structure the festival will focus upon our kinetic force through these various intersecting sites. Employing transitions by foot, bike and public transportation Dislocate will form an expedition into the diverse routes of the city and its hidden spaces, while questioning our relation to the ground beneath our feet.

In this state of transit does our mode of transport isolate us from that which we travel through? Is there a destination? And how do we know when we have arrived?

Exhibition
Entering the current of the city, conducted through its circuits, in a constant state of disturbance, is it possible to configure with our environment? When shuttled at such velocities can we find any point of anchor? Roaming these streaming channels what do we transmit and what do we receive?

What makes up our experience and expression of place? How do we scan, read and send the information before us?

These will be particular areas of discussion which the Dislocate exhibition will contribute to.

There will be an opportunity for work to be presented in selected exhibition spaces while connecting these sites with external sites. However the main strategy of the exhibition is to present itinerant works which investigate the surrounding environment, taking the viewer on a journey through the city, allowing a new experience of these immediate spaces and communicating this with other locations.

[PAM] has since grown into a vibrant and progressive international community of curators, academics, collectors, writers and most importantly the artists who choose video, interactive media and the Internet as vehicles to express themselves in the new century. It has been through these newly formed relationships that [PAM] has traveled the project to over 10 countries through its installation and special screenings that include the 2nd Moscow Biennial of Contemporary Art, ART|BASEL Miami Beach, WRO07 Media Art Biennale, Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, and the Lentos Art Museum, in addition to numerous incarnations at Scope Art Fairs over the past 2 years.

ARTropolis, Around the Coyote Video Lounge, Chicago, IL
Deadline: March 1, 2008

Around the Coyote, as a cultural partner of The Artist Project at Artropolis, brings you the Around the Coyote Video Lounge curated by LiveBox. ARTropolis is Chicago's citywide celebration of arts, antiques and culture. Running concurrently with Art Chicago, The Artist Project features original work from cutting-edge artists undiscovered by the gallery community. The Video Lounge will open for the preview celebrations on April24th, and run through April 28, 2008

Since the rise of You Tube and the use of video as a communication language, there has been talk about the death of video art. For many it is becoming increasing difficult to access the artistic quality of video art when the format represents entertainment and cheap reproduction. Very recently though, there has been talk of Video as "New". New York times critic Holland Cotter wrote in January 08, " At present it is shaped by a combination of pop fantasy, ingrainedcybersmarts, neo tribalism and the angst- free take on contemporary life that marks attention- deficient internet culture." Cotter was talking about a collection of rising video artists who were creating stunning original video. You Tube habitation and the like had liberated these artists to create fearless work. The ARTropolis Video Lounge is a celebration of video as a seminal medium for young artists today.

Send a CD with resume, statement, short synopsis of the work, and jpg images. Video should be NTSC DVD, if your piece is in PAL, please send mini DV tape. Label DVD and case with title, running time and contact info. Note materials will not be returned, unless specifically requested. Send proposals to:
