NEW MEDIA
Jerwood Moving Image Awards, London, UK Deadline : 03
December 2007
Jerwood Charitable Foundation announces first
national prize for moving image
The Jerwood Charitable
Foundation has today announced details of the Jerwood Moving Image
Awards - a major new prize for emerging artists working in digital
moving art.
Awards of £10,000 will be made in March to three
artists, and submissions are invited from 25 September. Dancer and
choreographer Wayne McGregor will chair a panel of judges made up of
some of the leading figures in arts and culture, including Marc
Boothe, independent producer and founder of B3 Media; John Maeda,
Head of MIT's Media Lab; artist Jane Prophet; journalist, author and
historian Sukhdev Sandhu and Jules Wright, Director for the Wapping
Project.
Encompassing a wide range of artistic practice,
from film, documentary, video and music to dance, installation and
drawing, the Jerwood Moving Image Awards welcome work from across
many disciplines. The awards will celebrate and support artists in
the early stages of their careers, and bring some of today's most
exciting talent in digital art to new audiences, via both the
website and next year's Jerwood Space exhibition.
The judges
will undertake a rigorous selection process, awarding work on
artistic merit and originality as well as on the quality of
production. Entrants are asked to submit work completed in the last
two years of 1 to 10 minutes in length; applicants must be UK- based
and have graduated from a recognised training institution in the
last 10 years, or exhibited publicly within the last 10 years.
Thirty artists will be selected for the shortlist, and these
names will be announced on 18 January when the work will posted
online to be viewed and to download onto laptops, telephones and MP3
players. There will also be a people's vote, and from the shortlist
stage onwards members of the public can vote for their favourite
online.
Eight finalists will be selected in February, with
their work exhibited at the Jerwood Space from 20 February - 20
March 2008. The winners will be announced on 4 March.
Roanne
Dods, Director of Jerwood Charitable Foundation commented: "This is
a hugely exciting initiative for us. We know that there is a huge
amount of amazing digital moving image work being created but often
within very defined disciplines. We hope that this award will not
only celebrate the best of that work and reward talented artists,
but also bring the best work to a wider audience"
The Jerwood
Moving Images Awards demonstrate the Foundation's commitment to
endorsing new practices in contemporary art, offering funding and
support for emerging artists working with new technologies. This was
reflected also on 18 September with the announcement of the winners
of the Jerwood Drawing Prize, where first prize was awarded to
Melanie Jackson for a 'A Global Positioning System', a 10 minute
digitally generated animation.

PROPOSALS
LOVE AND WAR : Exit Art, NYC Conceptplus
Call Deadline : October 15 Exhibition Dates December 1 -
January 26, 2008
In Winter 2007, to mark the five-year
anniversary of the " War on Terror." Exit ART
Exit Art will
present an exhibition that considers the relationship between war,
sex and love - toxic combination that is manifested in images coming
out of the current war in Iraq and in wars throughout
history.
Love and War appear to be in conflict, but are
intimately connected, we often cannot have one without the other.
ExitArt is requesting artists to submit work that connects longing
with violence and love and war, the business of war in all its
sexual manifestations.
For each ConceptPlus show, we issue an
international call for artists to propose new or newly-
contextualized work in response to a given theme or cultural
condition. The exhibition is then curated by Exit Art's
founder/directors Jeanette Ingberman and Papo Colo, who view all the
proposals for new work and work samples submitted by artists (as
many as 600 for each show) and select projects to be presented
and/or commissioned for the exhibition. Every artist who submits a
proposal has equal access to the curators, regardless of their
previous experience, making ConceptPlus a highly democratic
curatorial model. Recent ConceptPlus exhibitions at Exit Art have
addressed ideas ranging from the reconstruction of global cities
(Exit Biennial: Reconstruction, 2003) to the image of America's
highest office (The Presidency, 2004), to contemporary Latino icons
(L-Factor, 2005). A fundamental precept of the ConceptPlus model is
to remove barriers to cultural participation by creating exhibition
opportunities limited only by the artistic idea itself. As we have
implemented this model over the past two years, Exit Art has seen a
dramatic rise in both the number and geographic diversity of artists
submitting proposals in response to our open calls. ConceptPlus also
enables us to directly support the production of new work, as an
increasing proportion of artists propose new projects that are
commissioned exclusively for Exit Art exhibitions.
Proposals
may be for work in any medium. Please submit a one page description
of your project idea: a sketch of the proposed project; a resume;
and documentation of your previous work (10 slides or images on CD,
please send images at lowest resolution so they open quickly, or a
3-5 minute NTSC VHS video or DVD). Please include a self addressed
stamped envelope for the return of your work. You will be notified
by email of your involvement in the exhibition so please include an
email address with your materials. Exit Art is not responsible for
returning works submitted without a SASE.
