Jurors:
Rebecca Morse, Assistant Curator, MOCA The Museum of Contemporary Art
Since 2001 she has flown solo on shows for filmmaker/photographer/provocateur Larry Clark, Aaron Siskind and Franz Klein (2001-2002), and Lee Friedlander (2002). Her biggest endeavor was the Lucian Freud exhibit (2003). From House to Home: Picturing Domesticity went up at MOCA's Pacific Design Center exploring concepts of domesticity inside homes and out. MOCA at Cal Plaza saw Public Record, a showcase of recent additions to the museum's photography collection. Also exhibited was Mid-Century Masterworks From the Collection, the pick of the litter from MOCA's permanent 4,200-piece collection. Recent projects include Street Credibility, which she co-curated with artist Mike Kelley, and Lorna Simpson, whose 20 year survey she coordinated for MOCA. She is the curator of the recent exhibition Bill Owens: Suburbia as well as the forthcoming exhibition of the work of photographer Florian Maier-Aichen for June 2007.

Gabriel Ritter, Curatorial Assistant, MOCA The Museum of Contemporary Art
His interest in art and technology is exemplified by his curation of "Out of the Ordinary: New Video from Japan" concurrently screening at the Getty Center and MOCA. This collaboration between the Getty Research Institute and Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, combines a survey of the early history of video art in Japan (1968-1988) with presentations of contemporary Japanese video art. Two programs at the Getty Center highlight a broad range of short videos, and four programs at the MOCA's Silverscreen Theater at the Pacific Design Center focus on individual artists and larger themes within this rich and varied history. As part of this collaboration between MOCA and the Getty, each venue will present portions of both programs for a total of six nights.

Rex Bruce, Aritist, Curator, Director LACDA Los Angeles Center for Digital Art
Curated or participated in over 40 shows, screenings, panels and events since opening LACDA in early 2004 including the Guggenheim Gallery/Chapman University, and exhibits in collaboration with SIGGRAPH, Dance Camera West/UCLA Live/Hammer Museum, and the Silverlake Film Festival (upcoming May 2007). His video "Widescreen" is screening at the Pompidou Center, Paris this June. He is known internationally for his advocacy and leadership within the digital arts community.

RESIDENCY
Artist in Residence at Durham Cathedral, Durham, UK
Deadline : 31 May, 2007

Artists working in the visual arts are invited to apply for this Residency, which provides the opportunity for an artist to assess their development and practice, while responding to the setting in which the Residency is based.

Benefits include:
  • a fee of £17,000
  • the provision of a studio within the Cathedral precincts
  • subsidised living accommodation at St Chad's College, Durham. This includes full board during term time. A kitchen is available for the artist's use. The artist's contribution is £1363, which is one-third of the total cost.
  • the opportunity to teach at the School of Arts, Design, Media and Culture at the University of Sunderland as a Visiting Lecturer. The rate is that paid for university lecturers and is additional to the fee referred to above. Teaching (or agreed collaboration) is arranged with Professor Eric Bainbridge, the School's representative, to reflect the particular strengths and interests of the artist appointed. The School is very well equipped and offers a wide range of full and part-time courses in Art and Design, including BA (Hons) in Fine Art; Photography, Glass and Ceramics, Design, Performing Arts and Media Studies; and Fine Art, Photography, Design and Glass at MA level.
  • an appropriate form of introduction of the artist and her/his work to the staff and students at the University of Sunderland
  • a final show at the end of September
In addition, during their term of residence the artist will be offered the opportunity of a short-term collaboration with an artist from another art form. £2,000 is available for a fee for the collaborating artist. The residential nature of this post is a major strength. The artist appointed will therefore be expected to make a reasonable commitment to residence in Durham for the full term of the residency. The interviewing panel will wish to know of other commitments elsewhere, agreed or anticipated. Artists with extensive commitments already agreed elsewhere might consider applying in another year. A typical applicant will be above the age of 25, be in possession of a good first degree - BA (Hons) in an Art and Design discipline (1 or 2i) - and is likely to have completed an MA course. The applicant will have participated in solo exhibitions outside of those associated with the BA and MA course undertaken. This residency is not suitable for artists who have graduated from a BA course in the last three years.

The applicant will be able to demonstrate some continuous themes of exploration, and will be able to show that a sustained period of work over a year would lead to a resolution and the fruition of these ideas. An ability to work on their own, directing their own time and endeavours, is essential. The applicant will be able to communicate clearly and with enthusiasm to BA, MA and Art Foundation students as a part-time lecturer in whatever field the individual has the most to contribute/

Applicants are invited to submit
  • a brief statement (no more than 300 words) on why they feel this residency is appropriate for them;
  • a current curriculum vitae and a telephone number where they can be contacted;
  • the names and addresses of two referees, one relating to professional practice;
  • visual documentation of their work: either up to ten slides of recent work (each clearly marked with the artist's name, and an arrow indicating the top of the slide) and an accompanying list of the slides with title, dimensions, date and artist's name, or work submitted on a DVD (domestic player) or a CD (cross format or Mac only). The DVD or CD should be an appropriately edited version of approximately five minutes' duration;
  • a stamped and self-addressed envelope (or label) for the return of the visual and/or other documentation.
Short listed candidates will be invited to Durham for an interview on 25/26 June 2007.

Please note that travelling expenses for candidates selected for interview can only be paid for travel within the UK.

Artist and Writer Residency, Santa Fe Art Institute, New Mexico
Next Deadline : 05 July, 2007

The Santa Fe Art Institute Residency program began in response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. SFAI responded by initiating the Emergency Relief Residencies, which provided respite to over 130 artists who had been displaced from their home and studios in the aftermath of 9/11.

Due to the enormous success of this program, SFAI established its full time Artist and Writer Residency program. The following programs are now offered: Artist and Writer Residencies, Writers Foundation Residencies, Witter Bynner Poetry Translator Residencies, Balkan Artist and Writer Residencies and Emergency Relief Residencies.

Artists who are selected for residencies receive living and working space at SFAI, centrally located within Santa Fe's vibrant and diverse cultural community. Resident living and studio space is housed within the SFAI facility, a nearly 17,000 square foot complex designed by renowned Mexican architect, Ricardo Legoretta. SFAI's complex offers gallery/exhibition spaces, sky lit studios, a growing contemporary art library, courtyards, laundry facilities, communal kitchen, and dining and living room areas. All residents receive private living quarters and bath. Visual artists have work space in the more communal areas of the building (flexible walls provide each resident with a minimum of 700 square feet of semi- private studio space). Writers are welcome to use the library space for writing and reading, as well as their own private rooms equipped with desks. An outdoor courtyard offers space for working in a variety of media.

SFAI's facility meets all ADA requirements with complete accessibility for wheelchairs to studio and living spaces. Two resident rooms are equipped with bathroom facilities for wheelchair access, and since SFAI's complex is one level, there are no stairs or barriers. All signage is presented in large clear type (English and Spanish) and in Braille.

Campus security is available 24 hours a day, and a Residency Assistant is always available for residents on site. The unique SFAI environment allows residents to be as interactive or private as they wish. There are no requirements on the work produced during their time at SFAI.

Artist and Writer Residency

The Artist and Writers Residency (AWR) is primarily for emerging and mid-career artists, although established artists are encouraged to apply as well. The AWR offers residents the time, space and opportunity to take risks, experiment on new projects and/or continue on works in progress. Lengths of residency range from one to three months.

Further information

Residencies are by application only. A peer selection panel meets twice a year to review applications. The next two postmark deadlines are MONDAY JULY 5, 2007 and JANUARY 5, 2008.
