EXHIBITIONS
Stamp*Stick*Fly , Gasworks, London
Deadline Fri 15 June 2007.

Gasworks wants your posters!

Following the success of Blink in 2006, Gasworks' new open submission project for 2007 will work with the format of the poster.

The distinctive feature of this project is that it will combine an open-submission with activities-based presentations. It will be a cross-disciplinary project open to all based in the UK, and is intended to connect with different individuals who either already work with the format of poster design, or would be interested to use this opportunity to work with this format for the first time. How practitioners work with the poster format is entirely open; for example it can be used for announcing an event whether fictitious or real, as a form of art object, or another sort of statement.

Those who wish to submit to Stamp*Stick*Fly will be asked to submit a work in the format of a poster, which will be seen by a selection panel consisting of:

Åbäke (design collective)
Alessio Antoniolli (Director, Gasworks)

The selected poster designs will be exhibited at Gasworks over one of three weeks of the project in August 2007. The three weeks of the exhibition will use a selection of the posters submitted as inspiration for a series of events.

Rules for applicants:
  • Applicants can submit 1 or 2 posters.
  • Posters should only be a maximum size of A2 format.
  • You can produce the poster using any materials.
  • You should send the actual posters to us, and not documentation.
  • Please bear in mind that any posters selected will be exhibited, and may be stuck to another surface, thus it may not be returnable.
  • If you would like your poster returned, please send a stamped addressed envelope with correct postage.
Submission information
Submissions are welcomed from all artists and practitioners interested in producing a poster, and are based in the UK.

Poster and event presentation will take place in August.

There is no submission fee.

Short-listed artists will be notified before the end of June.

The selectors will consider all submitted works. How people use the format of the poster is open to interpretation by those interested in applying.

An application form is available here (opens in PDF reader)

*Concept and Idea of Anonymous Drawings*

Drawings (size max. DIN A3 = 29,70 x 42,00 cm / 11" x 17") by anonymous artists will be shown in the gallery on the scheduled evening; the exhibiting artists will remain anonymous until theirwork(s) are sold. Works will sell for a uniform price of Euro 100. Buyers will be informed of the artist's identity upon purchase of his/her work. Exhibited drawings will be the work of both professional and non-professional artists. Because of this, we ask that the viewer him/herself draw the line between Art and Non-Art. The artists agree to stay their individual person in the background in favour of their product. PUBLICATION
Book Works, London
Deadline 31 May 2007

BOOK WORKS NEW OPEN SUBMISSION SERIES COMMISSIONING EDITOR: STEWART HOME

SEMINA - WHERE THE NOVEL HAS A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN

Theme
Semina takes its inspiration from a series of nine loose-leaf magazines issued by Californian beat artist Wallace Berman in the 1950s and 1960s. We are looking for experimental prose that draws inspiration from art as much as it does from literature; for writing with a radical and extremely selfconscious understanding of itself; work that takes itself both beyond and behind the mid-twentieth century après- garde and is inspired by groups such as Cobra, the Beats, Fluxus, Oulipo, the Letterists, and those involved with the new novel and Black Mountain, as well as the more recognizably post-modern experimentation associated with figures like Kathy Acker, Dennis Cooper and Lynne Tillman. We aim to publish work that will cross any and all genre boundaries, that is unable to recognise differences between poetry and prose, fiction and non-fiction, high brow and low brow, art and life; and that continually reforges the passage between formalism and sensuous activity. Themes that interest us include drugs, magic, the art world, life, death and transcendence; but above all we're looking for unknown artists and writers willing to take risks with their prose and who demonstrate total disregard for the conventions that structure received ideas about fiction.

Design
Semina will have a series identity and a regular format drawn from Wallace Berman's Semina magazine and verifax collages. We will commission and work with a designer on this project. The print-run will be up to 1,500 copies. Published works will be between 30,000 & 50,000 words or 72 & 128 pages.

The Commission
Commissioned and edited by artist and writer Stewart Home, the series will publish nine books, six of which will be selected by open submission, a further two commissioned by the editor, and a final title Blood Rites of the Bourgeoisie to be produced by Stewart Home. Three books will be published a year. The selection will be by Stewart Home and Book Works staff.
